I know of someone who has had the air box / air filter housing stolen from their MK2 Punto 1.2 16V Sporting. They have fitted one of those universal cone air filters from Argos as a cheap fix. They fitted it directly to the air intake at the side of the engine just behind the battery.

The problem is, we don't know what the other bit of plastic piping is for which is at the front left corner of the engine bay. It used to be attached to the original air box housing. It is currently left open with nothing attached to it. Is this important for anything? Where does it lead it?

It's the bit in the red circle in the photo. I don't have a photo of the actual car in question to hand.

My guess is it is meant to feed the air box with cool air from outside the engine bay which is warm. Not essential but the engine will probably perform worse as hot air isn't as dense as cold air.

Yep! Someone busted the door lock, raided the glove box and boot and nicked the air box out from under the bonnet! :p

The pipe just changes the location the air is sucked in from. Putting a cone filter up that high and it'll pull in hot air which means the engine won't run as well. Putting the cone filter or the original airbox on the end of this pipe which feeds down lower into the engine just means it'll suck in colder air.

Car should run without it but no idea how much damage it'll do long term - probably not a lot.

Should be able to pick up the piping pretty cheap from a scrap yard or something.

Looks to be a variant without the Mass Air Flowmeter, so it'll probably be fine in terms of not damaging stuff.

The breather is still attached to the intake.

The other pipe I believe is to control where the air is drawn from, taking hot air from the back of the motor there isn't going to do any harm, not great for power though.

The only thing that might be excluded is the evaporative loss control system, which makes no difference whatsoever to running. The car will just emit a little more hydrocarbons (not from the exhaust).

Thanks all! Yeah I know it will be drawing in hot air from being right up behind the battery. If it was my choice I would be sourcing the original parts from a scappy. I've already seen a few on eBay too.

Probably not worth making judgements based on that photo as the cars precise configuration, seeing as it's a different car :p

The engine bay photo is of an exact same car. Same engine spec, same year, etc. I wouldn't put a photo up if it was different.
