The PSP2 to be as poweful as the PS3

the biggest problem with the original PSP was, well it was rubbish. the controls were absolutely shocking, we've all been using dual sticks for ages now, to suddenly expect people to accept using one stick is just plain stupid, the UMD drive is irritating in a number of ways, its loud and it makes stupid start - stop noises all the time, the opening mechanism is simple to accidently break (albeit simple to fix as well), the battery life leaves a lot to be desired, the sound quality isn't good unless you use headphones. the things are fairly heavy and i find them extremely uncomfortable to hold (couple of people i know do as well, seems to give us a crampy feeling in hands, yet PS3, 360 pads don't). so to be honest sony need to do a lot of things to the PSP, giving it PS3 quality graphics isn't really one of them since it'll rediculously reduce an already poor battery life.

for crying out loud, make it more ergonomic, easier to hold and to use, get rid of the UMD drive some something thats not irritating, seriously why can't we just get games on memory cards? USB3.0 is nice and fast, come on sony! also give it more other uses, make it a good MP3 for example? so yeah, im sticking with there is loads that needs to be done with the PSP before ever 'claiming' it to be as powerful as a PS3!

No I said same as xbox360

look

Have trouble reading or just comprehension?

he was implying (i believe) that you are a clown because the Xbox 360 graphics quality is naturally superior to the PS3, so by saying the same as an Xbox 360 you were basically saying better than a PS3...least thats the vibe i was getting! :D

Unless I am mistaken, the announcement for this is due on Thursday?

I predict it will cost more than the 3DS but have marginally better battery life. As the 3DS has proven all this extra graphics/procesing power just means crap battery life which is useless for a portable device tbh.

The one thing I am curious about in the release details is what media the games will be on. The PSPGO has more or less flopped and should not be bought by anyone serious about playing PSP as quite a few of the games that come out on UMD have not come out digitally on the same day, some haven't even been released. I doubt UMD is a viable media either. Maybe some sort of PSP cartridge based on Memory sticks?

Yep Thursday 3pm Tokyo time which is 6am here Thursday morning, hopefully I'll be up posting across any new info in this thread.

New rumoured specs are,

- Less broad but more high than the original PSP (PSP dimensions: 17X7.4X2.3 cm)
- 5" OLED multi-touch screen (12.7 cm)
- Multi-touch trackpad
- Resolution: 960 x 544
- Quad core ARM Cortex A-9
- PowerVR SGX 543 MP4+
- 512MB LPDDR2 RAM (1GB devkits)
- 16GB flash + SD slot
- Wifi, 3G, bluetooth
- Acelerometers, GPS, gyroscope, front and back camera
- November 2011

Apparently leaked from a developer, if true this thing is going to be a beast, 3G is a great addition too.

Is 3G really a great addition?

The connection quality and ping would surely be no good for online gaming, and data download restrictions would limit its usefulness for grabbing content off the store. Maybe their planning on offering a monthly PSN subscription including 3G access with no data limits when downloading from the PS Store.

I'll wait for the mobile phone version running Android.

It's the next logical step imo and would be perfect for emulating SNES and Megadrive games.

That wouldn't even be required if Nintendo didnt fath around with the DSi Store or the 3DS store for that matter.

If the PSP2 did turn out to be poweful as the PS3 with 3G etc, then its obvious Sony still hasn't learnt that you cant throw raw power with hi res graphics in a handle device and expect it to sell.

This! I'm bored of my iPhone 4, it'll be going straight on eBay if the Playstation branded phone is any good.

"No worries. He also said that the PS3 game that he'd worked on previously was ported to the PSP2 in less than 1 week and it was running at 60FPS. "
Not sure I believe that. Surely the PowerVR graphics cards architecture are so different it would take longer than a week to port?

But the speed might be right. The tech GPU specs are around x8 to x10 more powerful then an Iphone and more powerful then the GPU in the PS3.

Theoretical performance of both consoles.

PSP2:
PowerVR SGX 543 MP4+ = 133 million polygons per second (960 x 544)
ARM quadcore A9 = 10-20,000 MIPS
(45nm)

PS3:
NVIDIA RSX = 275 million polygons per second (720p/1080p)
PS3 Cell BE (PPE only) = 10,240 MIPS
(90nm)

PowerVR numbers don’t work like Nvidia. PowerVR’s numbers gets bigger as the screen gets more complex. If the overdraw rate is x5 in a complex screen you times the PowerVR million polygons per second by x5.

Assuming 133 million polygons doesn’t already have overdraw factored in and assuming the average game overdraw is 2.5 then the number that matter is 332.5 million polygons. In a high complex x5 overdraw screen that’s 665 million polygons for PowerVR.

Plus the PowerVR chip has stuff like FSAA with almost no performance hit.
