Is anyone a member of any Bannatynes clubs?

I ask because I am a member of my local Bannatynes club and I have to say since it was taken over from Bannatynes a number of years ago, it was originally Living Well, it has slowing started to go downhill.

In the actually gym itself, it's a very depressing atmosphere, it would make you want to turn round and leave before you lift a weight or even warm up.
The music, well I say music but you need to have supersonic hearing to hear it, is the same songs ALL the time on repeat, the volume is so low that you can hardly hear it, all you hear is slamming of weights, rowing machines and running machines. The place was recently repainted by a 5 year old (who painted over switches, wood, and other parts of the wall which are different colours) the floor is all pot holed where the weights area has been extended and the floor not suitable for it. The place is dirty, dust and dirt in all the vents and air-conditioning on the roof and beams - the list goes on including the showers which are horrible and the attempt to re-grout them was done but another 5 year old. And the weights go up in 2's until you get to 30 where the jump in 6's and 4's. We were promised new in-between weights but it never happened - still waiting- instead they bought in new cardio equipment, TV's and matts.

This was never the case when it was Living Well, things were looked after, things were cleaned out etc etc, music was hearable etc.

The place just needs a good refurbishment and has become very tired.

What are other Bannatynes gyms like and how are they kept?

A friend of mine works at one of their clubs and the complaints from the members are the same but by the sounds of it there is no money available to spend. I feel sorry for the staff to be honest, a lot of them really care about their work but aren't given the facilities/equipment to do it.

I'm confused, you are saying it's gone downhill since a take over, yet they bought new equipment...

Surely when you agreed a contract with Living Well there weren't the weights you wanted either. In my experience though, if a gym doesn't have what you want when you sign the contract, it's probably better to find somewhere else that does.

God I hate ANY music playing in the gym, just seeing some rapper or pop puppet over gesticulating on the TV screens makes me wanna scream.
Much rather enjoy my own tunes out my MP3 player, and if I happen to forget my MP3 player - thank F they dont have it on loud!

im a member at the banatynes in leicester and must say it is really well run, clean and well equipped, hopefully this is not the exception!

I go to Darlington and they do quite well to cater for people doing big lifts, and people that just want to hit cardio. Two smith machines, plenty of benches, a rack that allows adjustable levels of height for squats, dips and racked deadlifts. Plenty of floor space (when it's not heaving like in July with the usual bunch of muppets) to take your free-weights to, two cable machines, loads of machines and two racks for barbell benching.

The staff are polite and helpful, the place is clean, showers are nice enough...... Only horrific thing about it is the price. Fifty-bloody-two pound a month! But I justify it 'cause it's literally at the end of the road where I work, so I never lack motivation.

I'll probably end up cancelling my sub when my yearly contract is over, as I can join a subsidised gym for £110/year. It's further to travel to, but I'm past the "newbie" stage now where commitment is waivering! Plus a couple of friends go there.

I may end up spending half my time down Leeds-ish (Normanton) soon as well, so will most likely end up joining a council-run gym with a colleague down there for when I'm staying with the missus.

Have you asked them to turn the music up?

Others have, you receive something along the lines of "no, it's at a low volume so people can hear their own personal music from their mp3 players" or "it's so the members can hear the trainers and so clients can hear their personal trainers"

When I joined living well I was just starting out, none the less, the equipment was very good, high standard and well kept. Bannatynes replaced all this equipment when they took over with technogym stuff, a lot of things were not directly replaced, for example the decline bench was taken away and never replaced.
The dumbbell weights they brought in are good and go but in 2's until you get to 30kg, then it jumps to 36, 40, 40 and 50kg. I mean that is a really big jump!

I agree, I am no fan of all this sort of music, but at least something in the background is better than nothing to try create a bit more of a motivational atmosphere.

52 a month is cheap for a chain gym ;)

Really? I pay £29 for total fitness and from what I can tell from the website its not the smallest one, has pools etc everything!

On a thread related note - sounds really silly but Twitter - Bannatyne on Twitter replies to people talking about his gyms, he might get something rolling!

Sounds a long shot but it's worth it - I have seen him respond to peoples praise and criticism quite frequently about his gyms.
