Are ATi finally turning a corner?

The 4890 / 5850 that I had were great, but the GTX 570 is better that the 6900 series, the drivers are a lot better too, AMD/ATI drivers aren't as good as they used to be.

It's a more expensive card so it should be better :). Cheapest one on OCUK is £284.99. Both can be overclocked pretty well too and at stock it seems as if the 6950 is a fair competitor. My 6950 I can get stable at 1000Mhz so that's a 200Mhz overclock but I keep it at 950Mhz for gaming. I know when the GTX 570 is overclocked is when it will start pulling away but for the price difference it's a lot closer than it should be IMO.

I'm actually thinking of getting a GTX 570 so this is not a case of purchase justification syndrome :D. The reason being that it's slightly faster isn't what I want it for but it's a bonus at least, it will give me the proper resolutions for my gaming CRT 1920x1440 as I only get 1600x1200 with ATI. I tested a 9800GTX for a friend about 8 weeks ago and noticed this. So that's why I want the GTX 570, otherwise it would be a pretty pointless upgrade from a 6950 overclocked to a GTX 570.

I don't know what is wrong with drivers for the 6900 as every game has been fine for me?. Even though it's not official, it has shown no problems to me just like I experience with official sets so I'm not sure what you're talking about?. If you're having specific problems fair enough but I've not had one problem at all with drivers yet.

I had a 5870 for a while and I gotta admit the thing was a beast. The only thing that made me sell it was that it couldn't handle 120hz as good as my old nvidia card, hence the reason going back to nvidia. If they were able to support 120hz without all the screen flickering and stuttering I'd go back to ATI without a doubt.

That problem has long since been fixed (personally i never saw it and i`ve had a 120hz screen since march 2010).Also since driver 10.12 you can now select 120hz on virtually all the resoulutions and not just the native res i.e 1920x1080.

Hopefully when the 7*** series of cards come come out they will be faster cards and sorted their drivers out.

Of course the gtx 570 (£284-£349) is 'better' than the 6950 (£234-£260). The 6970 (which is priced similarly to the gtx570) outperforms the first in games like Formula One 2010, Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 2, Aliens vs Predator, and is only a couple of frames behind in games like Dirt 2, Hawx 2 (at lower resolutions 1680*1050 and below). Overall I couldn't say that the gtx 570 is better (knowing AMD is poised to launch new drivers which they say will improve perfomance) unless I was highly biased. But hey, both are great cards, not identical but then again they are different cards. Also dunno what is this talk about drivers but a lot of the people using radeon (including myself) never had any issues with drivers.

Green Team FanBoi much?

Your only saying that so you personaly can justify spending more money for something that does the same as a something from amd

Yeah you see a lot of this talk from people that move from AMD GFX to Nvidia. Happy that your 570 is serving you well.

I've had ATi cards in the past and had a few niggly problems, but I hear a lot of good things nowadays about how the cards are top notch for the money.

But, my main point is have AMD managed to start supporting these cards with drivers properly? From my previous experience its been mostly the drivers that have caused my issues and I always swore I'd take the green route when I bought my new system, but its now very tempting to go ATi again. Any opinions on recent support from AMD?

Thanks

I never had a problem with my Radeon 9800XT drivers and that was years ago. No driver problems with my 4890 or 6970 either. I did have a lot of driver problems on Vista with my 8800 GTX in between tought. nvlddmkm.sys crashes regularly.

You will pay a premium for an nVidia card. They offer a lot more which is why you will pay that bit more over an equivalent AMD card. AMD still have a long way to go when it comes to AA and min/ave frame rates need to be better. AMD have always been the budget brand of choice for me.

Although, the premium is quite subjective, for the majority it's just not worth it.
And performance wise they are not much different at all.

What can you expect from someone nicknamed CUDA? :o

Yea apart from the fact they have the fastest Card out and will bet a better one soon?

When I fob Nvidia off whenever they bring out an inferior card, you can all me an ATI FanBoi, I won't mind because I am one. By the way the ATI 6950 is going back! it's just not good enough. ;)

Cheers, it's a pity those GTX 560's dont have more memory would be a cheap and cheerful SLI option for anyone in two minds to go 30". :)

AMD have had the fastest card out for a long time, although thats a bit of a given when there are no other cards to compare it against. If you want to compare gpu's, by all means open a new thread and go for your life.

All you get with AMD is speed. I expect that though, when the AA is awful and there is nothing else the card can do. As I said, its the Dole queue persons card, cheap as chips, fast enough to do a job but lacking in everything else.

I have had:
Nvidia 6800GT, 8800GTS, GF4 Ti200
AMD/ATI x1800xt, 4890, 6950 (unlocked).

The only driver issue I have had with any of those is when Bad Company 2 came out and the AMD/ATI cards took a while to load the level. That is it.

I honestly don't know whether I am just lucky or people are whining over nothing with graphics card drivers! I have never used SLI or Xfire though.

Every time i Have upgraded my card in the past 5 years AMD/ATI has always had the better price/performance product for me.

It might be fluke.

Only graphics cards i have ever had real issues with have been nVidia 7800GTX, 2 of them died on me in 3 weeks... that was particularly annoying. Also the infamous nvdisplay.dll crash fest back in the day.

It goes in cycles. Personally I'm on the other end of the cycle so I generally end up with Nvidia cards.

I'm looking forward to Southern Islands from AMD/ATI, and it should arrive when I'm looking to get a new machine.

Last Nvidia card I had was the 8800GT, then went back over to Ati. Had some problems with 4870x2, but have had the 5850 for the last year and no problems whatsoever.
