just ordered a monitor (LG E2240S) as my pc is currently connected to the tv, which is pretty much being watched all the time. my question is, if i have a cable connected to the tv and one connected to the monitor, will it recognise that the tv or monitor is switched off and automatically display on the one thats switched on, or will i have to unplug one every time?

someone just answered a similar question

i have dual monitors on my 6950, i usually watch tv on one.. win media centre, and whatever on the other.. if i turn off one it doesnt shift the display.. you can press win+P to disable the secondary one tho

so which would be the best to have as the primary display then, the monitor, as if i want to use the tv i can easily swap display without any inconvinience, whereas is the tv is the main display i would have to stop everyone watching it to enable duplicate screen mode? or am i best just unplugging one?

correction, you can select both on different image, both on same image, either off or on,

windows calls the second screen projector

but what about post and boot screens, how will i know there is an issue if i cant see? and the windows+p doesnt work until you are logged in does it? so inputting password would be tricky.

ok thanks for your help. will have to have a play tomorrow when it arrives. oh, last thing, what about resolutions, the monitor will be able to go higher than the tv, so would the dual monitor setup limit the max res?

no i run 2560X1440 on the u2711 and 1920x1200 on u2410 [both max for each monitor] so you will be fine, they can be set independantly

went to set everything up this morning, and the HD6850 has one DVI socket with the 4 pin holes around the flat pin, and one that doesnt. both my DVI-VGA adaptors require the pin holes :( gunna have to either hunt out a DVI-VGA lead without the pins or invest in a HDMI splitter for the tv.

My Asus 6850 has 2 DVI connectors, but only 1 is capable of using a DVI-VGA adapter on. It might well be the same for you.

yeah is a pain, will just have to go hdmi to tv. why did they make 2 different variations of the socket, surey it would make more sense to all be the same?
