Coulda sworn there used to be a forum for PSu's

Aaaanywho,
someone asked me a question today, to which i truly didn't know the answer. I was asked,
"i don't have a modular psu, can i use scissors to cut off the cables i don't use as long as i take them up so the copper isn't showing."

I'm not a sparky, so i simply don't know the answer.

On the surface it seems a ridiculous idea, but disregarding reasons of warranty and it being easy to cable tie correctly, can anyone offer any wisdom on this?

you've got to be kidding right? use scissors

*Edit*, just hide the other cables, bung them in a drive bay wrapped up in electrical tape, no point butchering cables off

Technically yes its possible as long as the cut cables are probably covered with insulating tape, but theres no way it would be classed as advisable.

You can do but, I would make sure they are insulated properly.

It would be far safer to tie the cable's to one side.

On the surface it seems a ridiculous idea...

Let's put it this way: if a person has to ASK whether or not chopping a piece of high-powered electrical equipment up with scissors is a good idea, then they are absolutely, categorically NOT qualified to (a) make that decision; or (b) do it.

If they are electrically-competent enough to do so properly, that's fine - but then I suspect they wouldn't be asking.

:-/

Took the words right from my mouth

Lol, it was one of those questions where i felt i knew the answer, but couldn't bring myself to tell him he was an eejit for asking. I did actually  at him, lol.
Then the more i thought about it, the more i wanted opinion on the matter.....from you guys.

I don't see why not. I'm going to be different and not bash the question to pieces with a cricket bat. If he's dead set on doing it and refuses to cable manage properly by hiding them behind the mobo tray or whatever, then I don't see why he can't snip them off.

However, make sure he does wrap the ends in insulation tape, and don't go snipping too close to the PSU, leave an inch or so. The amount of current coming from a Molex or Floppy connector isn't going to be enough to blow your house up is it?

Obviously it's not the smartest thing in the world to do, and a problem free snip isn't guaranteed, however I for one would like to see pics of it once he's done it, and find out if it's alright in a months time, which I'm sure it will be.

Just remember that expanding onto the PC is going to be out the window, so no new hard drives, fans, dvd drives etc.

So to summarise, Snip off, insulate with tape, turn on and RUN :)

I'd be worried that any cable that I were to cut off would come in handy in a future build. For example a floppy connector may be useless for many but I find it handy for my Xonar DX.

Electrically, provided all cables are insulated with insulation tape properly, nothing bad would happen. Without a load or a conductive material at the free end no current would flow.

I'd insulate each wire and also over insulate all wires in one bundle. Double insulating is always a good idea. Or maybe have a length of adhesive lined heatshrink fitted to the end and squeezed down.

I'd consider this job if I wasn't able to hide the cables and I'd be confident enough to know what to do. I certainly wouldn't need to ask.
