what to upgrade to now....280gtx has died

hi all

i havent looked into graphics since i bought my gainward 280 card.

it started playing up by turning the signal off to the screen and the red led would come on at the back of the card.
i dismantled it, gave it a good clean and fitted an after market cooler which has helped the card last another 10months but it has finally died.

so im now looking for a new card.

previously i have always had green cards but i am open to ati's offerings, a few required specs.

most important - it cannot be as loud as the 280gtx was as the sound from that thing was really bad.

size is not a problem as long as it fits into a coolermaster cosmos s.

it needs to last at least 2 years playing everything at 1920 x 1200 with full eye candy.

no sli setups

and under £360

any help much appreciated....

Their still a bit more than what they were at release a month or so ago.

6970 v GTX 570

At that resolution I'd get a GTX 560 for £200 or a 6950 and flash to a 6970.

Bother quieter and cooler than your old card.

maybe i might get a ati card this time around :eek:

6970 seems a tad better on my main games apart from the NV specials like hawx and maybe batman i would expect but i dont play those

SNAP! Well I replaced my 280 (as it was giving artifacts) with a 460 and its much better and quieter.

ive been looking at cards all night now and im even more confused.....

so 570gtx
or hd6970

or overclocked 560ti or flashed hd6950 :confused:

trying for best bang for buck card that can run most things maxed out all the eye candy.

also is it simple to swap from nv to ati? i remember years ago that it could mean a windows reinstall....

GTX570 would do you more than fine, depends on what you want really, if you want 3D and PhysX then go for the 570 otherwise 6950 is best bet.

GTX560 is also a good card but the 570 could be useful if you consider going to a 30 inch monitor in the future.

I've switched between companies twice now without reinstalling and have not encountered one bsod/crash this is also without using driver sweeper so yes it is fine.

It should simply be a case of uninstalling the nvidia drivers and then just popping on to the AMD website for the most recent catalyst driver. Just make sure you do a thorough uninstall of the old ones.

570 GTX all day long at that resolution. Mine overclocks to nearly stock 580 speeds without even touching the voltage.... :cool:

With regards to playing pc games on tv screens. Would the 570 be able to run anything on a 50" tv? Would I be able to demo 3d on a 600hz tv?

surely if he would go for a 30 inch monitor a 2gb graphics card (6970) would be superior to a 1.2 gig one (gtx 570)

Gainward Phantom 570 is a beast, but its triple slot:

I dont like any of the other 570s though.

Or you can save money and get a 6950 and flash it, or a Gigabyte GTX 560 SoC which is just as good as a reference clocked GTX 570.

Lots of nice choices available atm.

starting to think flashed 6950 or a soc 560ti as there boh just that little bit cheaper than the gtx 570

I heard that flashed 6950s cant be voltage modded though, so they wont overclock much.

yeah i seem to be in the same boat with the 280 dying. 2-3 year warranty seems like a good idea, never had a gcard die on 2year pt

The screen size isnt the issue, its the resolution. A 50" TV would still (presumably) be 1080p which is 1920x1080. The 570 would shine at that resolution.
