Well done Sony, Seriously for taking the bull by the horns and actually doing something worthwhile with android phones and more importantly the marketplace.

hopefully this sends a message to other devs to get their act together on android (and more importantly Google itself)

good day for all imo and looking forward to seeing what they pump out

i am going to assume that given Sony are making the emu directly that it will be much more capable then the already existing 3rd party one in the MP

Great news, here is the press announcement to get people up to speed.

SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT TO UNVEIL
“PLAYSTATION®SUITE,” DELIVERING THE WORLD
OF PLAYSTATION® TO ANDROID™ BASED PORTABLE DEVICES

Simultaneously Launching “PlayStation®Certified” License Program to Provide
PlayStation® Content and Development Support for Android™ Based Portable Devices

Tokyo, January 27, 2011– Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today unveiled “PlayStation®Suite” (PS Suite), delivering the PlayStation® experience to Android™ based portable devices*1. Through this entirely new initiative, users will be able to enjoy PlayStation content on an open operating system for the first time in PlayStation history.
In the dramatically evolving and diversifying mobile market, the number of users who enjoy games casually on a variety of devices including mobile phones, smart-phones and tablet PCs, has been increasing significantly. By offering “PlayStation quality” content to this rapidly growing market, SCE will not only deliver the PlayStation experience to a wider base of users around the globe, but will also be able to offer game developers and publishers the potential to further expand their business opportunities to these devices.
In providing the PlayStation experience on Android based portable devices, SCE will commence a “PlayStation®Certified” license program for hardware manufacturers. Through this program, SCE will offer necessary support, including development support as well as logo licensing, to ensure the delivery of PlayStation quality experience across various devices.

On the software front, SCE plans to provide PS Suite content within this calendar year, starting with original PlayStation games*2 (PS one® classics) that will allow users to enjoy “PlayStation quality” gameplay on their Android based portable devices. SCE also plans to open PlayStation®Store where users will be able to download content in an easy to use environment, directly via the Android based portable devices. Moreover, SCE will provide a new game development environment in an effort to ensure new and compelling content is delivered on PS Suite, which will also offer opportunities for a wider base of developers and publishers to further expand their business on various portable devices.

Newly developed content for PS Suite can also be enjoyed on the next generation portable entertainment system (codename: NGP), which SCE announced today. Users who have never experienced PlayStation content can get a taste of the PlayStation experience through PS Suite and from there, they can enjoy the ultimate portable entertainment experience that is only possible on NGP.

SCE will vigorously enhance the entertainment world delivering the PlayStation experience to a wider base of users.

*1 Android™ 2.3 or beyond is required.
*2 PS one game console software title. We will announce the tiles when ready.

This will indeed be fantastic, Apple should be worried about this big time. They were really pushing the iPhone to be a strong mobile gaming device but this from a giant such as Sony Playstation could really ruin it for them.

Can't wait!

This is seriously needed, gaming on Android is miles behind iOS right now. Very happy to hear Sony are taking charge.

^ I'd be surprised if it doesn't end up on iOS/WP7 etc.

Dunno, I could see it being and Android exclusive for a fair while at least. The "Playstation Phone" will be running Android so it makes sense to have it only on that platform.

Sounds great but in reality I can't see it been a big deal. It's just not possible to play a traditional game on a touch-screen, at least not on phone screens.

I need a pad for my DHD, I can't stand MT controls!

There have been Wii Mote hacks for the Nexus One before, but I don't have a Wii so haven't been able to try them, but it seems ideal for something like this :D

Hopefully they'll honour the original PSOne games I've brought on PSN for my PS3, looking forward to old skool GT2 and Driver on my phone :D

I hadn't thought of that, I've got a bunch of PSOne games on my system that I've bought or got free via PS+

Abe's Oddysey would certainly make my commute go a bit quicker!

You have got to love how sony are releasing all this stuff, the reader application, the games store etc. And their flagship phone Of their sister company Sony Ericsson, can not even use any of it. As they require 2.2 and above which the x10 will never see "officially".

Flagship phone will be the Xperia Play (Playstation Phone) by the time this comes out.

Really I thought it would be the xperia arc?

But that's irrelevant, the x10 is still the current flagship phone, and under 1 year old. And none of this is supported due to Sony Ericsson next to zero update policy. Which is very poor in my opinion.

The x10 came out when android was still very much in its infant stages and from what I have read google put the hammer down a fair bit to phone manufactures to make sure x10 style "lack of updates"weren't going to happen again.

I would hardly say infancy stages.

It came out about the same time as the htc desire etc, Android 2.1 had been out a while, and 2.2 was only a month or two away from release.

As there is already a PS emulator for android i see this as some thing Sony has got to do other wise it risks losing part of the market and with its own phone coming out soon it makes sense that if its marketing the games they may as well make them available to other android phones.

It may have been designed early-ish (Still almost a year after the G1 went on sale), we saw leaks of it around the same time as the Passion (Nexus One) and Acer Liquid, when 1.6 was the current build, but then 2.0 appeared on the Droid that month, followed by 2.1 on the Nexus One in very early Jan last year, then there was a couple of months wait. Then the X10 was released. 2.1 is the point when Android truly grew up and stopped being "niche" , and the X10 was way after that was announced, and should have shipped with it IMO, even if it meant a slight delay.

I think the reason for the fact it shipped with 1.6 is simple: Look at every manufacturer who builds Android handsets. All of their first Android phones shipped with vanilla Android, then once they'd learnt how to build a stock phone, they began customising (G1, Droid etc became Hero (Sense) and Droid X (MotoBlur) etc). Sony decided to customise immediately which was a huge mistake IMO.

The fact the Nexus got 2.2 before the X10 got 2.1 adds to the anger felt towards Sony and their Android updates.

This is what concerns me about the Xperia Play: Yes it will have the best controls for the PS Suite, but it'll get stuck with old Android as Sony takes ages reworking the hefty DRM and skins the Play will no doubt have.

I can't see myself buying a non "Google Experience" phone ever, having had the pleasure of Nexus One ownership over the past year.

So are we going to see Android devices with analogue sticks and buttons? I don't really understand how this will work.
