Due to an accident with my computer i am having a claim processed which involves a replacement system, and have been offered a gtx430 as replacement for my previous 8800gt, as it is like for like, or better if this cannot be offered, surely this card isn't either like for like or better?
Any thanks offered would be brilliant, thanks

Off the top of my head the 430 is closer to the 9600GT than the 8800GT but the next card up the 450 is decently faster.

Alright so here goes,

Just spoke to them about several things that were wrong with the replacement and have another question in a minute, however they now seem to have offered me a gtx445m...
I might be being a bit stupid here but surely a 445m is a laptop gpu, which in turn would be integrated into the motherboard somehow as a chip rather than a physical graphics card?
Anyway I have also asked for a quote to pay a little extra and put either a 460, or depending on cost a 6950 in there, thoughts?
And finally, the motherboard in the system originally was the p7p55d, and i have been offered a ASUS P7H55D-M Pro, is this also a downgrade, thanks again for all your help

Yea, the GTX 445m is a laptop GPU - since you are using a desktop system then please don't accept this.

You could try with the quote thing (don't ask, don't get and all that) but most likely they will not allow you to do this - they usually want to give you a like-for-like performance replacement.

As mentioned above, the closest replacement for the 8800GT is a 9800GT 512MB. This uses literally the same chip as the 8800GT, just with a smaller manufacturing process (so it uses less power).

If this is not available then the HD 5750 (or is it called the HD 6750 now?) or GTS 450 are the closest current generation cards to the 8800GT in performance terms.

As for the motherboard - that is certainly a downgrade. I would strongly suggest you push for a full-ATX P55 board (as opposed to a micro-ATX H55 board).

They have agreed to quote me for the upgrade in cards (as it is stated in my insurance i may pay the difference, but am a bit shocked about the motherboard, when queried today i was told it was the forerunner (the newer replacement for my old board). I think it would probably be best to call them and actually ask to speak to the buffoon that recommended this

In that case, absolutely do it. Even the GTX 460 768MB (costs ~£120 new) is much faster than the 8800GT - have a look at this comparison. If you can stretch to a 6950 - then that is even faster and has a good chance of unlocking to a full 6970.

Yea, that's bull - a H55 board is certainly not a replacement for a P55 board. It is from a totally different (lower) line of s1156 motherboards.

Also, you can still buy the p7p55d brand new from many reputable retailers (although not OCUK at the moment), so it's not like it's unavailable.

May I ask what CPU you had, and what are they replacing it with?

I had an i5 750 - they are replacing it with an i5 760.
The case I had was a full clear perspex case (I was 15, I know sorry!) and they are replacing it with a 902 v3, and the ram will be like for like on the G.skill, generally quite happy, just the motherboard and the graphics card that i need to call about i suppose

Sounds fair enough. I just hope you get the graphics card and motherboard you are entitled to.

Since it sounds like you will be able to pay an excess and upgrade the graphics card, is there any chance you can pay a bit extra ~£40 and get a sandy bridge i5 2500K CPU and change the motherboard to a P67 one (should be no more expensive than a P55 one)?

Possibly, but it's been a long struggle to get this far, and to be honest, it's too much effort, this will do me until such time as i can afford a beast of a computer, just nice to know i was correct regarding the motherboard, and the graphics card will be sorted I'm sure, just hope they don't play silly beggars with me and be awkward.
