i just order this Radon Torosaur" Intel Core i5 2500K 3.30GHz @ 4.40GHz Overclocked Bundle - Gigabyte and haf 932 case, this will be my first build
do i need to use a anti static wrist band when fitting my mobo?

Nope :)

Just touch a radiator or a item which is earthed and you be fine, I have fitted a few motherboards.

People sugest just touching the pc case while the powersupply is plugged in (OFF at the wall and OFF on the switch of the psu) but it still grounds the case and so you.

as seraph says use a bit of common sense. just dont be dancing round in nylon moccasins, wearing a shell suit and juggling your ram sticks at the same time.

that said i got one free with summat or other, cant remember what, but i do use it from time to time and especially if i'm poking round inside some1 elses pc!!

Never used one, never had any static problems. Just use common sense. Try to hold components by their edges, earth yourself before starting and be careful.

The only times I've seen components damaged during installation it's been through rushing or doing something stupid.

After I spent £900 on here the other week I thought of the same thing should I buy an anti static band, the girlfriend laughed at me, but I thought **** this I just spent £900 for the sake of £5 I'll get one because you never know what can happen it was £5 well spent rofl, And to be fair I did feel like a plonker while wearing it ROFL

Never built my own PC and wasn't even aware at all that this was the case. You supposed to do this when installing any new components?

hmmmm this could be the source of some of my recent problems....

it could well be, ESD damage may not even show up straight away, it could be weeks/months down the line. it may not destroy your components there and then, rather just severely shorten their lifespan

Well, as I'm due to install new ram, psu and graphics card this weekend ill bare it in mind and discharge myself on the radiator before hand.

Just develop an OCD for radiator and case touching.

I actually have some antistatic gloves and I use them - they came with my Tagan PSU and are nice thin gloves.

I dont actually wear them because they are antistatic though, I wear them to stop my fingertips going sore and cracked, and to prevent any accidental abrasions.

Sorry to split hairs but isn't the whole point to ensure that you are at the same electrical potential (voltage) as the case you are working on, technically you don't need to be grounded just the same potential as the case, which is why you clip an antistatic wrist band to the case you are working on, not the the nearby radiator? I'd sooner touch the outside of my case before taking something out rather than a radiator.

You should discharge yourself before touching any componants to make sure you dont fry them.

Made me Laugh out loud so loud my house mate wanted to know what was so funny!

Never in the last 15years have I used a wrist band and not once have I fried a component!
