4-Chan 'Anonymous' web-site hackers arrested.

They do this to Microsoft. No one cares.

They do this to Facebook. No one cares.

They do this to someone in the name of Wikileaks, arrests are made.

Just saying.

Doesn't the new version of Low Orbit Ion Canon hide the users IP address?

If it doesn't I hope they add it. It is always good to have a defence against "legal" takedowns that Governments can do.

if on a PC you must assume anything you do can be traced back to your machine... the only way to be sure of anon would be

This is true. One of the best pieces of advice anyone gave me with regard to the web was "always assume everything you say and do is being recorded somewhere and can be used against you to your detriment".

Even with Tor and seven proxies you can be found.

It is interesting that it was persued quite frankly, DDoS happens quite a lot in retaliation to things but I havn't heard of any reported arrests.

Strange that first article I've heard of an arrest being made is in relation to WikiLeaks.

People completely misunderstand the whole 'hide your ip' thing. You can't do it unless you go through an anonymous secure proxy (of which there are very few and private and small bandwidth. Certainly not up to free usage by thousands). By default they cannot be used for such purposes and even then the proxy owner would get in deep trouble (unless they are colo in North Korea or something).

You may be able to hide your ip as an individual, but it can't be done on mass scale and not through a single piece of software.

Tor etc. are some forms that can provide protection to you, but that doesn't mean that others won't get into trouble - and their purpose is not for such uses.

how is that hacking?
thousands of people need to use LOIC at the same time to take a site down the police have obviously gone after a few random people involved the media and courts are stupid and believe whatever they are told.

yup these few random ip's out of the thousands are the ring leaders

or you go out in a car with a laptop loads of people still have unsecure wifi

Correctomundo - 10/10.

It is wise to assume that whatever you do on t'Internet or on a mobile 'phone, you CAN be caught, assuming someone is sufficiently concerned.

Frankly, I don't believe that claim, it may be true across the millions across the UK, but I don't believe that you will find that many.

Actually you can hide your IP address by crafting TCP packets to spoof the sender IP, just don't expect to get anything back again.... which of course for a DOS is not a requirement.

theres a few in my area, i bet the majority can stumble across one easily.

its not that hard to break the encryption on someones wifi with a sniff anyway ;)

Same for most things, and also like most things you don't have to make it impossible just to expensive or time consuming to bother.

You're probably right on the "completely unsecured" front but there's plenty with protection weak enough to just absolve them and their isp from responsibility but easily gotten though.

I think most of the 'protesters' involved will have imagined themselves to be part of such a huge group of people, that the Police wouldnt bother to track them down to prosecute them.

Except they were wrong.

LOIC appears to be a very simple tool for the Police to trace back to an IP address and prosecute - hence easy arrests/prosecutions make the Police high-tech crime unit look better. It's a win-win for the cops :)

I'm sure it can be traced back... all the hardware devices in the chain know who sent them the packet...

ASSUME it can be traced...

To send a packet a computer has to speak to a network device your device puts an electrical signal onto a wire the next device could work out all sorts of stuff form that electrical signal, considering (im guessing) there cannot be more than a few 100 peopel on each wire the signal charastics could probably be used to work out who (which device) sent the signal even if you spoof everyhting...
