My PC has turned itself off twice in the last two days. Both times when playing games. Each time it just instantly shut down.

I was able to turn it on straight away afterwards.

I think it is most likely to be the PSU. Any way for me to know for sure?

check temps by running gpuz in background and logging to file, check cpu too but if it is temp its moe liekly to be gpu if happening during gaming
are there any windows event messages?

What were the system temps like.

Can you run Prime 95 to double check for stability also try with no overclock.
Does it shutdown in all games.

more likely an over heat protection of some kind kicking in.

download hwmon and monitor your temps over time and see whats going on.

My PC has been running safely for a year and a half. I haven't even checked temps in a while.

Just checked the temps and the CPU seems to be a lot toastier than it was previously.

Currently idle at around 70degrees. It was idle at 48-49 last time I checked.

When I ran Prime it jumped to 100degrees pretty quickly.

Going to have a look at what might have caused this.

That's whats causing the shutdowns then. The heatsink may have lost some contact with the cpu if it's been knocked or whatever, it's easy done if it's not solid. Just take off the heatsink, re apply some thermal paste... and put it back on securely... i'm sure that will sort you out.

Agreed i had same problem with my Q6600 system shutting down. Checked the temps and they were idle at 70oC and 98+ fully loaded. Done exactly what Buchanan said and idle at 40oC and 68oC loaded.

Not looking forward to reseating the heatsink. Tried doing it before without taking the mobo out of the case and cut myself on the fins!

I guess I will have to be resigned to taking it all out.

:(

Had this myself recently, turned out that the fan controller had been turned down to the point where the fans wouldn't start. Oh the relief.
