Best game ever.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

For me personally it was the game that changed my whole perception of what games could be. Took me awhile to take the plunge and buy it (I thought I would hate it, looked crap to me from the screenshots I'd seen) but review after review gave it so much praise that I eventually gave in. Man, I had no idea that games could be like this. Completely blew me away and I didn't give up on it until I had completed it. Took me months. I've never felt that sense of wonder again. Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time come close but this game was probably the reason that I'm still playing now...almost 20 years later.

So, for me, the best game ever.

Too difficult to choose just one game, so:

Dreamcast:
Resident Evil: Code Veronica
Shenmue
Skies of Arcadia

PS1:
Final Fantasy 7/8/9
Chrono Cross
Grandia
Resident Evil
Syphon Filter
Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider 2

PS2:
Final Fantasy X
GTA: SA
Okami
Persona 3: FES
Persona 4
Shin megami Tensei: Nocturne
Shadowhearts: Covenant

Probably loads I can't remember too :D

Opinion? I guess it has to be.

Metal Gear Solid (PSX)

Although I have strong feelings for loads of other games it must be said.

FFVII,VIII,X
Metal Gear Solid 2, 3 & 4.
Half-Life 2+

For console I'd probably say zelda: ocarina or time

So much in the game was groundbreaking at the time and the storyline was really good. This is closely followed for me by goldeneye, mainly due to its epicly good multiplayer at the time, then resident evil 2 on the N64, with its randomiser mode giving the game serious replayability.

For the PC I'm torn between games I've spent an awful amount of time on and those that initially wow'd me but never replayed since etc. First game to come to mind is morrowind and its expansion packs, which for a purely single player game, where seriously addictive and fun. The only other game I've spent more time on that morrowind on the PC is world of warcraft and thats only due to how vast it is and the community of friends you bring along to it and make in the process.

Has to be Metal Gear Solid, amazing in every sense, just a perfect storytelling behind a great game, loved it, so much.

A massive, huge huge huge huge fan of Forza series too, but it just isn't going to be forever epic in the way that MGS is.

I still remember being amazed at how Psycho Mantis moved the pad when I put it on the table.

Little things like that are what make 'The Best Game Ever'.

Then there are all the other little touches in the MGS series.

Uncharted 2.

That game makes me so happy, and I love naughty dog for all the epicness they put in, which other devs completely fail to do in terms of graphics, characters, etc.

I'd put it like this.

RE2
RE (only putting this above the remake for nostalgic purposes :D)
RE (REMAKE)
RE4
RE CV
RE3
RE0

Only played half of Resi 5. Got fed up with the co-op trash.

What, Code Veronica is far better than the turd that is 4. :o That was when Resident Evil went from being scary to a clunky third person shooter.

Having just completed it again, I can say with confidence that Resident Evil 4 is the best video game I have ever played. It just blows almost everything right out the water.

The beta of 4 was better, that actually looked scary. 4 is barely a Resident Evil game, the inventory system and lead character are the only things that really qualify it as one.

That actually looks like a great mix of 4 and past games, shame they decided to go with an action focused game, they should have just made a new series instead.

Fingers crossed they 'reboot' RE, not with a re-make as such, bit go back to the roots and make a game like that video, that truly scares the living daylights out of people.

I definitely think it depends on your age. I've had a quite a few consoles, starting with the original Nintendo, but the best for me was Goldeneye followed closely by Mariokart on the N64 which was just an amazing console.

Goldeneye had epic re-playability but what really did it for both games was the multiplayer aspects. Awesome games that made for loads of hilarious moments.

UFO: Enemy Uknown (or Xcom: UFO Defense in the US)
simply the finest game ever made, still play it today and its still great

Civilization 2 and the original Counterstrike (pre-steam) come pretty close too

On consoles the sega master system port of UltimaIV is simply stunning, the best £12.99 I ever spent

ICO was the game i couldnt put down till i finished it,and i thought it was amazing,so that is my fav single player game and for multiplayer cod4
