I have a Airport Extreme which is connected to Mac Pro via Ethernet (1000mpbs aka gigabit) and I have my MacBook Pro connected via 802.11n over the 5GHz thingy. I also have USB HDD connected to the Extreme.

I am finding that the Wireless speed (aka transferring data from MBP to the USB HDD) very slow. I believe 802.11n should transfer at 108mbps.....correct? But checking in Activity Monitor, it is only transferring at a peak 9.8mbps.

Distance is not an issue, I'm in the same room and about a Metre from the AEBS.

Any ideas what's going on? AEBS is operating over 802.11n only.

802.11n depending on (IIRC frequency) is 150 or 300.

Mines set at 5Ghz for 300MBps. Between the Mac Pro and the MBP I can hit 20 or so MB/sec but to USB HDs connected to the AEBS it's down at around 10-15MB/sec, the Mac Pro to the USB HDs peak at about 20MB/sec.

Unfortunately it's not very fast in this department.

Confuses me about the MBps and MBs. If it's 300MBps that's 30 MEGABYTES a second, right?

I will try transferring 1GB file from Mac Pro to MBP directly and see what this speed is but I was expecting at least 100MBps.

I get a good speed from Mac Pro to USB HDD.

The USB bus on the AirPort devices can be saturated when doing OTA transfers.

Would it handle a .mkv file OTA, they are around 13mbps or something right?

Hmmmm

I know what you're thinking. Don't.

Its really slow. So much so I wired my Time Capsule up just to get all my data off it, when I got the NAS. Estimated time 48hrs... down to 1hr :o

300 mb/s (or mbps - megabits per second) is turned into MB/s (MBps - MegaBytes per second) by dividing by 8.

So 300/8 = 37.5 MB/sec max theoretical throughput.

As for streaming MKVs 720p is fine via WiFi-N, as is low 1080p, however anything at any decent bitrate you need wired and if it's really high bitrate then you need something slightly more powerful than a AEBS.

Just seems slow, 4MB a sec? Surely something is wrong.

Am I expecting too much?
