Rift: Planes of Telera Beta

The people saying Rifts == Public Quests, are wrong. There are very important differences between the two.

1) Rifts can spawn anywhere, they're not fixed in one place like Public Quests.

2) Mobs that spawn from Rifts can and do move out of the Rift area and around the entire zone. In Public Quests the mobs stay put.

There are other minor differences but these are two major reasons why Rifts > Public Quests. They can change a zone completely and have a much bigger impact on the game world and players.

Another big dfference is the impact they can have in PvP. Following a Rift mob around and helping them to take out NPCs and players from another faction. We haven't seen the full extent of this yet and the potential strategies involved.

I agree, that Rift is a lot like other MMO's but there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. As long as the game is polished, fun and has just enough little extras, then I will play it. We've seen what happens to MMO's that try to be too different. They last a few months and then die. I have no doubt Rift will have it's ups and downs but i really do think it will remain succesful and have a decent playerbase.

Im really not finding this game that great. i love the rift system but every quest feels the same and the pvp so far has been terrible.

But i am level 15 and have a long way to go...

I've been playing the game for a few hours, got to level 8.

My view of the game at the moment is its just like warhammer online but with portals. It also has a whiff of "my first mmorpg" about it as everything is simplified and everything is explained to you like youre an idiot.

I'll play some more seeing as its "free", but I dont think at the moment trion will get any of my money.

Also the graphics/performance ratio is quite bad, on max settings it looks...quite good but doesnt seem to go hand in hand with the sluggish performance.

A lot of serious discussion about a game that is exactly like WoW.

Has it just become standard to make MMOs like that? It's crap. I need a well polished real time combat MMO before departing from WoW. I have WoW all ready, I don't need to move to onto another one with a different face.

I wouldnt say that its exactly like WoW, i played wow for a while and id say Rift is much better all round and well polished but as eames said it does treat like you its your first which i suppose is what a lot of people need but its not what im looking for.

Il stick with rift for abit longer but still not enjoying it as much as i thought i would.

just waiting for guild wars 2...

A little tired of people saying that every new mmorpg is exactly like WoW. Its like saying any new fps is a copy of first COD or doom if you are pedantic.

This is MMORPG after all they're all going to have very similar basic look and feel. Want something different? go play mortal online.

Besides the game is more similar to WAR rather than WoW.

I do not understand why you'd not like that it spells everything out of you, I don't have time or patience to work out every little detail in the beginning just to start playing.

I find this game is very good and even thought I never planned on pre-ordering it (I am just waiting for GW2) I might end up playing it when it comes out. It all depends on the end game content which I obviously have not seen yet.

What else...I am enjoing this game so far :)

Had a shot of the warfront mode, what a joke, even though i can do 200 dmg i was barely scraching the others and my 'team' was usless running around like headless chickens so i kept getting mobbed by 3-4 players and dying, finally gave up and went back to pve.

It is polished but I all ready have WoW, I don't want to play a game the same as it with a different face. It has few different features but that's not a game breaker for me.

Warfronts are great, its just you have to allow players the time to learn the basics. I started joining them at lvl 11 on my Cleric and found them great fun switching between full DPS build and full on healing build. Get a group of guild members to queue with you and everything will run smoother and then you'll enjoy them no end !

When I was playing WAR I thought it was very different to WoW.

What do you guys expect from a game not to resemble WoW, an fps?

Care to elaborate, I can do the same thing, your point about it being similar to WoW is silly.

As to WAR, when I was playing it, it had a different feel. It was more about PvP.

WoW was mostly concentrated on PvE and raiding.

Did you play WAR yourself?

And again, what do people expect from an mmo not to be called a WoW clone.

Because the mechanics are exactly the same, the UI is the same, it's become standardised and frankly it's tiresome.

Even if you balance things differently, it's still the same but with a grating of lemon zing to make it look you did something new!

I did play WAR. Not for long though.

"And what do you expect from a game not to resemble WoW," I hadn't assumed you meant MMO, that's why I said it was silly.

WoW is as much PvP as PvE nowadays with 15vs15 Rated BGs and Arena matches. Can't say if it is balanced or not though.

Mechanics are the same in what, 80% of mmorpg, that's like saying fps are tiresome because they all have first person view with a gun in his hands, same goes with the layout, it works, its great. Rift takes best from other mmo's learns from them and adds something new, just like WoW did at the time.

I played WAR for quite long and I played WoW until wotlk was released and I can tell your from experience those 2 games were very different. WAR - PvP and pve is a filler, WoW - PvE and pvp is a filler for instance.

I was looking for something similar to WoW PvE myself but WAR was not it, it was very very different. Yet I enjoyed it

I'm not exactly trying to make you like the game better its just I am very tired of people throwing "WoW clone" phrase around without giving it a fair chance.

EDIT: Also while I was playing the game (im lvl 18 cleric right now) I was expecting it to be very similar to WoW because of the countless WoW clone trolls, yet my first impression was that it is much more influenced by WAR than WoW

That's partly why I like Eve and DDO so much, they dare to be different. Here's hoping GW2 won't be afraid to buck the trend too.

why people cant accept it's fine for others to either like or dislike certain games is beyond me, all this bickering is just plain childish  ...

theres a pretty decent vid of GW2 on the 'tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5wBIPF8bGA&feature=player_embedded .. GW2 looks extremely polished and has the same type of 'public quest events' as weve seen before.. still going to be a definate purchase from me :)
