Not very much. It was just a token as we had more important things planned like saving every penny towards our mortgage.

how do they get the smooth rounded edges on the setting (right term? for the prongs that hold the diamond) is it like pieces soldered in then carefully ground/filed or heated then melted slightly till they round up?

I think they use a very hot flame and bend them over - being platinum it'd have to be pretty high tho, it's about twice that of gold. I'm curious myself - time to visit youtube...

Is there a difference?

Yeah, the price which things sell on the high street do not represent their value.

Ie, you couldnt sell the ring you just bought for £5k, for £12k, you'd sell it for the price it was genuinely worth. Which is probably £5k! :)

Nice buy, and i'd totally do the same and if i were looking to propose i would be asking you for a linkup. But it isnt a £12k ring...

£425 while a poor student at uni. I designed the ring myself and had it custom made by a jeweller in London.

Screw anyone who says that you should spend a certain amount - 1 month, 2 months salary, whatever. It's all balls made up by the the De Beers cartel to prop up their shiny rock industry. And any woman who is going to worry about the arbitrary value of a ring is a vapid witch who should be avoided at all costs.

With a baby on the way, and us saving every penny we could, I spent less than a weeks pay :/ That said, she's always said that she doesn't like big, extravagant rings.

Paid £1600 from a jewellers.

My dad gave the owner the money to start up, so got it at that price. Was valued at almost double :)

The valuation subsequently influences the insurance so in their eyes it's worth that. I'm not disagreeing with you but in saying it was a smart purchase I meant that I didn't walk into a high-street jeweller and pay their asking price of which a large percentage is insurance and the rest a rip off.

I guess it's worth depends on your perspective. From ours we paid 5 for it so to us yes that's what it's worth. When it was officially valued it came out more...

With regards to setting it, it looks like the ring is cast and then the claws are pinched in using jewellers pliers and then buffed up.
