I'm going to Germany for a week to work, the flights suck so I said I'd drive there.

I was hoping for at least a mondeo or reasonable saloon for such a long journey but not a chance.

My car will be delivered tomorrow, they said it will either be a fiat bravo or punto or something or a Nissan note. Great, just how bad is it likely to be? Last time I did a similar journey I had the luxury or my Saab 9-5. Offering to drive may have been a bad decision.

Well I haven't had a hire car before, also work gave mr very short notice, they just use a travel company.

Guess I'll just have to suck it up and moan as I go.

I'd hate to do it in a Punto, diesel (not the 1.6 Eco though) or turbocharged petrol engined Bravo wouldn't be the end of the world.

I'd be pushing for something more 'suitable' though.

Any work hire car i've ever driven has been terrible, i recently had to take a 59plate Focus Econetic down to mid wales... defiantly the worst thing Ive driven thus far entirely down to the dire engine and scarily dangerous 'eco' tyres :(

A Nissan note sounds like bliss compared to that hateful no grip piece of misery.

Not sure how the insurance would work using my own car, they usually either do hire cars or fleet cars. Plus my car would use twice as much fuel, though thinking about it, fuel would be less than car hire lol.

And put your job at risk? Don't be so silly.

It wouldn't be putting my job at risk, if they don't want to provide me suitable tools for doing a certain job, the job won't get done.

Not sure how your company works, but here, we communicate what is and isn't right without fear of persecution.

They have provided you with a tool to do your job, the car will get you there. It may not be to your liking or what you would have chosen but that's largely irrelevant. Sometimes you have to make the best of what you have.

My company treat me perfectly well, no problems to report.

Providing me with a Punto or Nissan note and expect me to drive 500-700 miles into the European mainland is NOT providing me the right tools for the job. Yes they are providing something, but not the right tools.

That's like asking me to provide a backbone network infrastructure here at the office and giving me 5 8-port Belkin switches. Yes I could do something, but it wouldn't be right.

I had a Nissan Note as a hire car for quite a few days in Northern Ireland and had quite a good laugh with it on the coast roads despite it being ****. I've had fun driving a ride on lawnmower because I didn't care if I broke it. If you take the same view, the time will fly by.

How can the flights suck? I fly to Switzerland all the time and it's a doddle, 1.5 hours in the air, compared to 11+ hours driving, plus waiting for the ferry...doesn't compute...

At the company i used to work for i used to reject smaller higher cars on journeys >100 miles on the basis that I'm a big **** and it's cheaper to provide me with a suitable car than pay for physio when the wrong tool for the job does my back in. Alas, I was never given anything smaller than an insignia/mondeo when everyone else had corsas and 307s etc
