true but damn!
with this thinking about campaigning for Usury! :)
specially since some of my friends work for councils and have been told they are going to be made redundant

the so what being its 5bn or is that insignificant? is making money always right then? profit no tmatter what eh?

Slightly off topic but is there a thread which asks if people have changed their minds on who they voted since the election? Maybe a poll could be introduced to see who would vote who.

I think the difference in all this is that if he wins he gets the rewards but if he loses we foot the bill. Personally I'd be happy to place a billion pound bet on red at the wheel if I knew that if it rolled out black the country would pay for it rather than let me or my bank go under.

Are you dense? It's a hedge fund, not a bank.

No hedge funds were bailed out by the tax payer.

well as I said earlier the more this year goes on the more communist I get!

well maybe not but 5bn profit to me seems morally wrong almost as much as Microsoft 6.63bn.
but for me I may not like MS products but MS do have things like Sponsoring research and scholarships and other good PR things but do hedge fund companies?

Well the profits were (I make an educated guess):

2% fee for handling his hedge fund investment of $36bn = $720m

20% fee on annual returns of (has to be) $21.5 = $4.3bn or so.

Basically his investments returned a massive profit for his investors (almost 100%), of which he gets to keep 20% to pay himself and staff.

Such returns for hedge funds are beyond spectacular (a 10-15% is top notch in most cases) so good for him, he is obviously one of the best.

Hedge Funds make money for their investors. You have to check who his investors are to make a judgement on whether the money he makes have any good effect on society/economy.

One thing is for certain, he makes a nice bundle for whatever treasury he pays tax to (although it's capital gains tax he has to pay, not income tax), so in a way society benefits a lot from his profit.

We need to understand that people who make a lot of money usually pay lots of tax (apart from those that conduct tax fraud or other similar tax evasive schemes) which fills the gov's coffers.

EDIT: It's interesting to see that earlier on when his assets under mngmnt were $12bn, 95% of it was from institutional investors, not private individuals. He has also given a $20m gift to NYU Stern. It is quite common for these guys to spend lots of money in charity etc.

in the article it says
>> David Tepper and Bridgewater Associates chief Ray Dalio each personally >> making between $2bn and $3bn in 2010.

which I know the tax / government will use to support society/ way of life of the people of that country.
Its just that making that much makes me think the system is wrong.
