UK to double funding for polio battle

where as as development increases birth rates drop to barely 2, in some cases dropping below that.

it's the less developed nations that breed like mad, although the consume much less per person.

But either way we can produce far more food/water/most things than we do and the planet can support far more of us.

Do you really see much development happening in this economic climate at the moment? More importantly If the economy does slump again do you see much more happening during that? Also you've got to take into account famine drought and all other things that could affect our resource stockpiles eventually we WILL grow too large for our planet to support if our society continues as it is...It's only A matter of time 100 years, 1000, 1000000000 your guess is as good as mine.

Yep the developing countries are still building huge amounts of infrastructure.

yep just like it has many times in the past, I think we've come a fair way since the great depression.

Also you've got to take into account famine drought

Not so much of an issue in the developed world with huge industrial farms, where everything is controlled, short of some massive world wide permanent/long term change to the environment that's not going to change.

Eventually is a long time away and radically different to "There's too many people in the world"

And thankfully our society is always searching for more and has generally kept ahead.

Ahh but how much of it has actually been paid for? A lot of these developments are being produced with borrowed money, how long before those lending will want their money back, by that time how many of these developments will be running at a loss or otherwise and how do you think a second slump in the economy will affect lending and spending habits and in turn what effect will this have on these and future developments?

Short answer is we don't know all we can do at the moment really is Hope for the best and prepare for the worst if **** does hit the fan.

What evidence do you have that children are dying in our hospitals because of lack of funding?

Take any situation you want and you can apply it to it, people refused cancer drugs because of costs for example which was in the news not too long ago.

Polio problems are not simply monetary, the political problems in countries where it is endemic are a major cause of frustration.

Global problems require global funding.

There's too many people in the world anyhoo

There certainly is in a mindless consumption orientated society like ours, it's scary to think how much the planet has been pillaged over the last century for short term monetary profits, it's not even as if the world economy is booming as a result of the pillaging.

We donate this money, and all it does is give the corrupt people in the African states who control the money already an excuse to spend less on Polio vacinations themselves, so they can use that money to buy solid gold toilet seats or Roll's Royce's.

It's about £1 per person in the UK. Hardly a big figure.

There are lots of things that have been cut costing a tiny amount in the grand scheme of things. You have to start somewhere though.

If a person has a large amount of credit card debt, is struggling to keep up their repayments which consist of a large amount of interest, should they really be buying that £6 bottle of wine? Unless they're exaggerating their monetary problems of course.

The UK is never gonna be perfect but it seems our govt at the moment is more concerned with pandering to the public than cutting our defecit at the end of the day I'd rather they sort out the economy first then worry about sorting out their public image.

What are you smoking?!

VAT rise, NHS Cuts, Public sector pay freezes and imminent redundancies en-mass, education cuts, the whole Student Fee fiasco.

You really think they are just trying to improve their public image?!

It's funny, some people think the government's not cutting enough and others think that the government is cutting way too much. What's that saying about not pleasing all of the people all of the time?

If £60m (or whatever it is) is going to make a significant dent in the cases of polio per year then I struggle to begrudge the Government giving it. It's not a huge sum in terms of what is spent by the Government and while every little helps (etc etc) it's not exactly liable to make a significant impact on the deficit so gains vs costs it seems worthwhile to me.

As far as I'm concerned, the government can spend as much as it likes on aid, and I won't bat an eyelid. We're still the sixth largest economy in the world and still have an incredibly high standard of life.

I'm trying very had to hold in an epic rant about the disastrous effect the religious have had on the chances of eradicating polio once and for all. So hard...

What money is being spent? The nation is borrowing money to service a debt it already has!
