Basically my mate got out the car today with two workmates, turned round and seen a bright orange light swirling at a very high rate with smoke coming off it, coming down from the sky at a sharp angle - which sounds like a meteorite. He said it was about three times the size of a lamp post. Because of the distance he couldn't judge too well on the size but it was defenatly glowing orange (like the sun) and smoke

This happened at 7am this morning. Is this something that doesnt happen at all, or is there cases of rocks falling from the sky on the odd occasion.

I would have loved to have gone to pick it up, he explained which field its in, however he was just walking in to work and it was 3 fields away, and there is a farm house near the field.

I'd have a look at least. You know, when you go dogging near the field or something.

We're hit with rocks all the time but most burn up in the atmosphere. Then those that do make it through will most likely go into the sea. If it's on land then it'll usually be away from urban areas/people.

Lots of stuff from space does hit the Earth every year, but I doubt it would be the size your mate believes, something that size at the speed they have would cause quite a large crater.

Possibly smaller then, its hard to tell 3 fields away what anything is in size, especially something coming down at that speed from the sky.

FFS, if he'd gone to where it landed he might have discovered an alien survivor from the crash, became best friends and gone on all sorts of crazy adventures!

What the hell is wrong with people today?!?!

So you're going to search a field for a dark coloured rock.
Good luck :)

Most meteorites are located either near the poles or flat sandy expanses as the black rock stand out sufficiently.

Anyway how will you know if you've found it?

'Is this it?'
'dunno'
repeat.

Big field, farmhouse near it, falling ball of fire in the sky...lands in field.....

You should go and find Superman and adopt him before the elderly couple in the farm do!

Get a Geiger counter, it will no doubt emit some form of radiation?
