Hi All,

I'm just curious really. Do we have any OcUK CrossFitters? I know a few people speak of the virtues of the CrossFit.com Workout of The Day, but are there any affiliate gym members here?

Myself, I've just moved to CrossFit 3D after being a member of CrossFit Manchester for 6 months. I find the variety keeps me interested where conventional gyms fail me, although CF Manchester didn't quite show the amount of variety that I'd hoped for. 3D seems to show much more variety, and my initial observation is that it's much harder work!

Any other CrossFitters around?

I live in a random country town and we've just had one of these open next door to my work and I'm quite interested.

What are these actually like then? I like the idea of it being a more motivating environment as I tried a conventional gym and wasn't really keen on it. Did you have any one-on-one sessions and group sessions? How were they, did weaker people stand out and look stupid or did everyone fit in? I just get the impression that these kind of environment could be a bit elitist, especially in a very small town like Clitheroe where I am based. That and I practically know everyone round here. I'm a weed right now and want to get into it all, but worried about looking a twonk!

Definitely give it a go, we all have to start from somewhere, and one of the things I like about CrossFit is whenever I see clips, there's always a nice 'bros' aspect to it where everyone is encouraging everyone else. It's right next to your work too, which is convenient and one of the good things about CrossFit is you won't be 'in the gym for hours', you just go in, work extremely hard for a short time and you're done, no faffing about.

When I was at uni I used to follow CrossFit with a few friends. Its very interesting as it gets you doing stuff you wouldnt normally do.

Although I have to admit I still prefer the regular gym workout to it :p

Unfortunatey the nearest gym to me is an hour away and that is before you take into account the problem of rush hour traffic. Really enjoy it as long as the variety is there (pretty much what you said)

Some work outs can be pure body weight (pullups, pressups and squats once a minute every minute for 30 minutes) and others might be big on the weights (squats and clean & press etc) the philosophy fits in with my own on training which helps. Big on HIIT and supersets.

Just make sure you do the pullups correctly :p

There is an argument for the "kipping" pullup, but not much of one. Seriously if you get into crossfit make sure you do a standard pullup or chinup anything else is a waste of effort. If size is one of your goals then look at how many people who do kipping pullups who have a big back compared to those who do standard. If endurance is your goal then still do standard but "superset" with other things of higher volume like you are meant to in crossfit.

Oh and don't used an entire bucket of chalk. You don't need it a little will do ;)

Right, I think I'm gonna have to check it out. This is filmed from my local: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzWbpa5dV4w

Will purchase some appropriate attire first though, don't think the cycling lycra is gonna cut it on the "don't wanna look like a gimp" front and I don't anything other than casual trainers.

Working hard for a short time sounds great to me. I'm the master of not fannying about. Although I will have a 5 mile cycle home after the sessions!

The final paragraph sums it up nicely. Mark Rippentoe thought CrossFit was alright as well. It's good as long as you have someone with half a brain teaching you and you'll get some nice all round results, but if you want to look like the guys in the pics thread in this forum then it's probably easier to just do more traditional workouts. I see a lot of people doing CF that aren't physically that impressive, which is more down to a lack of focus on the diet side of things.

That said CF does teach you compound and Olympic lifts so if you end up doing stuff on your own, at least you'll have been taught good form.
