i have successfully flashed my 6950 to 6970 but it seems that i keep getting game crashes [not bsods or artefacts] with anything over stock 6970 clocks,

does this mean thats the limit for my 6950 or are there any other options

my first attempt at OC/flash of gfx cards

try giving it more volts if you must, however I advise against overclocking it further as it may significantly reduce the lifespan of the card itself what with being also flashed and everything (memory running at higher volts)

all i dare give it is the 20% in CCC and this makes no difference it seems, may just have to accept all ill get is stock 6970

Just flash it with the ASus 6950 shader unlocked bios
Much more reliable and has same performance as 6970

can you explain how it is more reliable? i thought the only difference was you could give it more volts?

Mod your original BIOS using this http://forums.techpowerup.com/showpost.php?p=2137760&postcount=381

This will give you the unlocked shaders but the 6950 memory timings. Best way to do it. On stock 6950 volts (1.100v) I could run 890Mhz, 900Mhz was a little flakey. Now the only way I can use voltage play is with RBE (Radeon BIOS Editor), there are other ways but I find this simple and quick to use.

You would be doing something similar to this above (link) but after you flash your BIOS back to the original after unlocking the shaders, you would be left with the default 6950 voltage of 1.100v compared to the 1.175v you get with the 6970 BIOS. So when you load up your unlocked BIOS in RBE you will be looking to change the voltage that says 1100 (probably vid3) compared to "1175" I wrote in that post as that was aimed at someone using a 6970 and using voltages higher than the 1.175v default to achieve a higher overclock.

If you get stuck or need any help then post back here. I'm taking a laptop to a friends with a universal charger so I can install an operating system on it but I should be able to push him off his PC and get on the forums for a read. Hopefully :D.

changing the voltage or clocks using RBE doesn't work. (well for me it doesn't) after booting in to windows it just shows a black screen

You can't change the clocks in RBE now. Only voltages. Maybe that's why you were unsuccessful?.

After I've saved with voltage change only and flash after renaming from .rom to .bin. It's been fine and I've done it about 5 times in the one day I was messing about.

is voltage an issue?

ive been using 1.17 [because im using the 6970 bios] and all i can seem to get is 880-890 and 1380-1385 on the ram

is more volts really going to help? you seem to do well on stock 6950 volts

maybe im just asking to much for the resolution i run at?
