Afternoon all,

I have an Asus p5n-e sli (I think). I bought it a few years ago from PC world as part of a system when I knew nothing about computers.

Sadly they sold me atower that had a 300w power supply so was actually unable to power the 2x 8600gs cards it came with.

I am now thinking of putting a gtx 260 in to the tower and gettin a new 650+ power supply just to see me thorugh until I can afford to build a new system.

Since I still don't know a great deal about building/upgrading could anyone please tell me if it will be possible to put a gtx 260 on to this particular MB and what power supply I would need to get to power it.

Thanks:)

dont forget to check the amps output on the 12v rail too. wattage is not everything!

my GTX295, Q6600 @ 3.2 uses about 500 watts when running both burn test and furmark so i should have thought that 650w is overkill for a gtx260. as long as you get a decent power supply a little extra power offers more scope for upgrade in the future without having to rebuy. If its a good price and a reputable brand then go for it!

Didnt want to start a new thread as i have the same Motherboard.

Wanting to get a GTX480 and run it with my 9500GT, but want a new PSU.

I have three power supplies in mind but not sure if they are good enough. Eventually when i get a new computer end of this year or next year i want this new PSU to run my new machine.
Probably keep the GTX 480 and PSU for the new comp.

OCZ 700w

XFX Pro 750w

Coolmaster 750w

Cheers will probably get the XFX then. Just missed a deal on hotukdeals for them though!
Does it have all the right connectors etc for my board?

I dont know much about connecting everything but this time will give it a go myself and hope it works.
Just hope i can fit a new GTX480 and my current card in there without it melting anything.

Case ive got is Thermaltake Soprano if that matters?

its got all the connections you could want, and that Soprano case looks nice and big from the pics I just googled.

Good, just making sure it was compatible with my Motherboard.
It is a little noisy the case fans but im not to concerned with that, especially since im going to get a GTX480.

Do you think thats a worthwhile upgrade? Nearly £300 for GTX 480 and 750w PSU. got a Q6600 2.4, 8GB DDR 2.
Probs going to upgrade next year to Ivy bridge but hopefully keep the graphics and PSU. It wont be obsolete in a years time for new games?

9500GT to a GTX480 is going to be crazy:D enjoy.

The psu/GTX480 wont be obsolete for along time, have you thought about overclocking your cpu? with a aftermarket heatsink and a 3ghz+ clock speed the Q6600 is a beast.

Tbh ive only played Football Manager recently on here but might get afew more games and compare the difference.

But the big one for me will be Cuda, going from 32 cores to 480.

I have, but i posted in the Q6600 thread and i was advised against it due to my PSU and Motherboard. I have copy and pasted his replies in here.

Cooler is Freezer7.
Motherboard is PN5-E SLI.

"Hi Pespro, kentfiled quads even the q6600 g0's get incredibly power hungry when overclocked! A q6600 running a modest 3.6ghz overclock at 1.35v will draw just shy of 170 watt of power alone!

You will a need decent psu rated at a minimum of 450watts. The single 12v 20 amp rail on that cheapo psu just aint going to cut the mustard!

also your P5N-E board has a very weak 3 phase power design, which really isnt quad friendly. "

Me: should i avoid overclocking:

"I would advise against it mate, you’re playing with fire if you overclock a quad on that psu!

I’ve uses a p5n-e board before, great board for conroe c2d overclocking, absolutely hopeless for overclocking kentfield c2q's.

tbh I would save up for a quality psu before you go out a by a new gfx card and ss drive. "

So with the XFX, overclocking will be back on the table then.

theres nothing wrong with your board for a overclock, you dont have to break world records, just try and get it closer to 3ghz.

The nForce 6xx chipsets were very poor for overclocking quads. But you should be able to get it to around 3ghz I would expect.

If anyone is thinking of buying one of these:

The packaging and build quality is very impressive as are the reviews, lets hope i have better luck than the Antec TruePower.

Will be installing sometime today and will be sending the Antec Hoover, sorry TruePower:D back for RMA on Monday.

ha so many wires!
Hope its not to daunting for me, when my last one went i took it to work and guy there did it in like 10 minutes was totally amazed.

So you reckon i should be able to get to 3.0ghz with no other cooling that what i have?
I was looking in the BIOS yesterday and saw clock speeds etc were grey and disabled, but i guess thats just a setting somewhere?

What programs do you guys use to check the temperature of things and to make sure its all runing ok? ive used CPU-z before but that was to just check names of hardware.

Is there anyway to check the 'overall' case temperature, with this new GTX 480 being hot just wondering if it would effect the other stuff inside my case.
