Desire Z hinge question

Hi guys,

I purchased my Desire Z a week ago and so far Im loving the phone to bits.

Ive got a question to you Desire Z owners out there: When you have the phones keyboard out, and holding it in your hand as if you were going to type... if you were to press the lower edge of the screen (the edge closest to the keyboard) do you get any movement (I get 3mm) or is the screen firmly held down?

That movement is bugging me, and Im wondering if it is standard on all phones or if its just mine. I hope I have explained myself clear enough....

thanks guys

Mine does this as well - I don't think it's really a problem. Don't let it bug you too much.

Tis a great phone - feels really well built overall so I think this movement is part of the design.

WHere do you mean exactly? If ive got the keyboard open and go to the top of the screen and put my fingers behind as if I was going to push the screen shut then I get a bit of wobble on the screen before the hinge starts to move.

If you mean you have some play between where the top and bottom pieces are touching with the device open then I have no play at all and they are perfectly flush.

Yea, when the device is open, on the overlapping section - if I was to hold it as if I was typing, and hit the edge of the top piece (just above the first row of keys) I get movement, maybe 3-4mm of compression.

If its the same across all devices, I wont bother returning it - but if they are supposed to be secure with no movement at all when open, then I will pursue getting it swapped!

Cheers!

Mine's flush there but if you press it hard there is a tiny bit of movement from compression. Do you really mean 3-4mm? That's a lot!!

Ok got the ruler out and its more like 2mm. But if its supposed to be flush that is quite a lot. 2mm doesnt sound like much but when you touch it (ie to touch the screen anywhere along its lower edge when the device is open) it does feel very limp as it compresses.

The device is a week old, so hardly been opened and closed much. I agree the build quality in all other areas of this phone is impressive - so I'll seek a replacement and hope that is better than this.

Let us know what the new one is like. I've just realised that although I though mine was flush, it does exactly the same thing and now knowing that others have no play at all, it's beginning to bother me!!

I bought it at the CPW store my friend works in, so hopefully getting a replacement wont be too much hassle. Will update you guys on my findings.

Unrelated note: I go an OTA update come through today - anyone else had this? Havent noticed any changes yet...

Thanks. Although mine isn't nearly as bad as some of the ones shown on youtube, it's become an issue now.....damn you!! ;) :p

Im on Voda. But the handset was bought sim free. I think ive noticed something new. If I tap and hold in a text input window, I get a mini magnified-view window ala iphone.

But Vodafone actually sells the handset, so they'd be pushing the update whether you bought from them or not!
What happens to those of us who bought SIM-free and are on a network that doesn't sell the phone?

Now I've got going with the hinge problem, does anyone have this issue? With the keyboard in the phone, if you tap the left hand edge of the screen (in potrait position), can you feel movement between the top of the phone and the keyboard? Mine is loose and you can see and feel the screen edge moving and hitting the keyboard part. (The right hand edge of the screen feels completely solid though). It has been like this since day one and although I found it annoying, I thought all the phones were like this and that it's not an actual fault.

I got my replacement today: and this new handset has no play when opened, thus confirming my original was loose. This one feels much more sturdy :)

Thanks for the update. When your keyboard is back in, does the screen feel a lot sturdier on the long left and right edges of the phone or is there any play there too?

My phone has been with HTC since the end of last week. They have replaced the hinge and it should be back with me tomorrow. I'll find out tomorrow if they have done a decent job.
