Just preordered Gigabyte 560 SOC... should I have gone for the GTX480??

So I just preordered the Gigabyte 560 Ti Super OC and just noticed the Asus GTX480 going for £200!

I know the 560 SOC is as good as the reference 570. And the 570 basically has the same performance as the GTX480. Benchmarks (depending on website) show the 560 SOC is slightly faster than the GTX480. But the 560 is 178Mhz clocked over the reference, have I made the right choice? I game at 1920x1080 and I plan not to upgrade the graphics for another two years.

Also the 560 SOC is £30 more expensive, but I guess I make that back over a year considering what I'd save on electricity bills if I go with 480GTX :D

Decisions! Decisions! Decisions!...

I'd snap the 480 up for that pre-order price, it's an absolute steal!

More memory than the 560 or 570 will probably come in handy over the next couple of years, plus most 480s clock pretty well anyway.

Well the SoC is also silent and cool, and uses less power so theres also that to consider.

If your not bothered about any of that, then the 480 is better.

I wouldn't. Agreed the clock and memory is higher, but 480 is becoming EOTL and the 560 uses more efficient technology. Despite being built off a 460, it delivers close to 470 performance and beyond...
Not to mention, the later 4XX series cards have infamous power/temperature/sound legacies. 480 being a partciular criminal here.

But I went for a 6950, not sure how that stacks against the 480, but it wasn't much more than the 480 offer price :)

Unless your using a resolution above 1920x and/or lots of AA the GTX560 SoC should offer similiar levels of performance while running cooler, using quite a bit less power and quieter.

EDIT: Just seen the price is going up on the 560 SoC :( at just over £200 it was a good position, £230+ puts other cards into consideration like the 6950.

I managed to pre-order the card at £225. I mean, a reference 560 competes with the 6950, where I believe (overall) the benchmarks show the 560 SoC should beat the 6950.

Yeah would have went 480 if you're keeping the card for a few years, 1GB will be a limiting factor with future titles with AA applied. The 480 slap a custom cooler on it, overclock it and it will put the 560 to bed.

Regarding electricity bills, the 560 SOC uses only 30 watts or so less than a 480. Not that it matters, who games 24/7 anyway, my PC is idle 19 hours a day.

£200 for a GTX480 and the value it represents frankly makes the 560 Ti, HD 6950 1Gb & 2Gb, GTX570, HD 6970 and arguably the GTX580 and HD5970 redundant if you can live the power draw, noise and heat that is.

Yeh, I think I might stick to the 560 SoC. It's on par with a GTX 570 and its quieter.
I have a HIS 5770 and its cooler is noisy so I dredd the noise a 480 would make.

With the 5770, I find myself having to increase the volume when playing games. My PC is right next to the monitor - I live in a student accomodation with the table built into the wall, so i can't route the cable.

Yea my reference 5770s were hotter and louder than my MSI 460s and 560s.

Reference coolers are notoriously bad for temps and noise, I dont want them in my PC ever again.

The 480 is like a V8 engine, unstressed with tons of power.

The 560 is more like a V6 Turbo tuned up, its got power when clocked to match a 480 in certain games, but clock the 480 and then its game over.

We sell both, we stock both, but my money would be on the 480 for sure. :)

Feeling no temptation to cancel my 560SOC pre-order and get the 480 instead.

I need something cool and quiet - that's not the 480 unless I change the cooler which is hassle, more money and voids the warranty.
