Family + Pc Nerd...

Yes, he gives me the ride home from the pub....for £6...he has the cheek to charge, yet I'm expected to fix his PC for free, for the umpteenth time and yet another day off wasted. He dropped 2 grubby old machines off at my house to change a HDD. **** take.

And yeah, I've had a beer or 4.

Ah tell him you want paying then. If they don't do you any favours i wouldn't do them one either :)

I dont't mind helping my cousin becuase he knows about PC's and only asks if it's something interesting or not simple. My uncle takes the biscuit, he phoned the other day because he couldn't get on facebook :/.

I don't help anyone with computer problems anymore. I stopped years ago. Why should I? A plumber would charge, a mechanic would charge...

If I was to total all the times I have helped friends/family out with a computer problem then I would be better off its been that many times.

But I cant do it to friends and family even friends of my brothers etc I know I know its not a good position to get into as like you know your self they never stop.

BUT in return I get help with other things so its swings and roundabouts.

I'm IT support for family and friends too, I wouldn't mind but not one of them has a trade or a skill that I'm likely to ever need in return, karma can only build up so far :)

Ah well it's free tea and biscuits anyway!

I recently set up 5 laptops for a work colleague
which included
unboxing them all
netwoking them
installing all the updates
installing antivirus
and office
setting up the wireless printer
and the wireless printer drivers
and the fax machine
plus scanner and the drivers

all he did was enter passwords so i didnt know them cheeky barstuard

thanks for the help!

i just avoid him now

I wish my family would ask me before buying tech stuff, their slowly learning though.

So much wasted money *shakes head*

why? because you let it happen.
Exactly.
I decided long ago that I wont fix anyone's computer.
If they complain I just profess, "I work with computers all day every day, what makes you think I want to continue messing with them in my free time!?"
Most of the family have the idea now, as do most of my mates. lol.

Same with anything though.

A joiner, roofer, mechanic, the list goes on and on. It wouldn't matter what you do.

I do it because I quite like helping people out and get a sense of satisfaction from actually being good at sometimes.

Only this weekend I fixed the wireless on a laptop for someone that works with my wife, they were going to take it to [a competitor store that can fix computers] or buy a new usb device - all it needed was the wireless enabling and a reinstall of the driver. I wasn't bothered about payment but they insisted, so I took £20 for about 90mins work.

I'm fixing stuff for my dad all the time, it doesn't help that he is so laborious over everything, I think he wants to know what I'm doing so that he can 'learn' but I don't think he will ever truly 'get it' and it would be much faster if I could just get on with it.

Actually it's got to the stage where I'm thinking about setting up that remote assistance thing to save him having to read out dialogs over the phone to me.

Your uncle charges you for a lift? :/

Charge him for fixing his PC then. Simple.
