oem or retail processor

If a warranty is worth it or not is up to you.

Are you prepared to take the chance on your processor failing after 12 months and having to buy another?

Personally I always buy retail.

on my 2500K: 1 year oem. 3 years retail. I went for retail. How much cheaper is the oem you have in mind?

I know processors are pretty reliable. If it lasts one year then you could be fairly certain it'll be a decent chip and expect it to last a good while longer but I prefer the peace of mind for the 3 year warranty.

Surely the extra £16 is more than worth it for 2 extra years of warranty?

depends how long you plan on keeping the CPU does it not, don't forget, there will be the inevitable new stepping in a few months once Intel have got to grips with the 32nm process, that will prompt a few folk to change CPU's as it allways does, especially if the new stepping yields any performance gains.

so for some the extra 2 years warranty just won't come into it at all, certainly wouldn't & doesn't for me.

I asked this question some time ago when I was looking to get an i5 760. I decided to get the OEM in the end because I saw one for £40 cheaper than the retail one so snapped it up. However, if it was a difference of £16, I'd definately buy the retail. It will always sell better down the line if its a retail one with cooler, etc.

Personally I'd get the retail for the 3 years warranty just in case something happened over time just to be safe. However the choice is yours.

I always buy OEM when I can and use the extra money for a better cooler. Plus I lap my processors any way so my warranty would be void lol
