the prime minister's website is rubbish

Yet if they got some design guru to make the site at a cost of many thousands, everyone would be whining about where our tax money is being spent.

Doesn't look that bad.

Question: is using Wordpress in a commercial environment (e.g. for a professional business website) frowned upon? Is it seen as cheap/amateurish?

Personally for me, no. What do you think?

They paid £11,000 on the "design" (you know... unpacking wordpress to a folder and uploading it). £400,000 total cost for a year.

They didn't abide by the license of the theme they used either.

£11,000 for somebody to knock together a wordpress site and steal somebody elses theme

Shocking.

I looks cheap to me, unless you have a very nice custom theme. I think it's because most dodgy spam and content farm type sites use it and it just looks slapped together in a rush.

Joomla or Drupal seem a lot more professional to me for some reason.

could be worst, i remember when making your whole website out of flash was all the rage and it took minutes to find what you wanted....

Occasionally you still come across them, horrific. Flash will forever be remembered as the worst thing to have happened to the internet, ever.
