Family + Pc Nerd...

my sister was always asking me to look at her pc because it was running funny. It was always full of viruses ... she never took any advice about pc protection, firewall etc and then always blamed me for things going wrong.
The very last time I looked at it I installed monitoring software that sent me emails that consisted of screen shots of the sites that her, her husband and her kids were visiting. Turned out her kids were sneaking downstairs and logging on to look at filth at stupid oclock in the morning and downloading all sorts of crap and she was having an affair behind my brother in laws back as I was reading it all on messenger!!!

Ohhh how I laughed when I told her :D:D

Why oh why.

I have custom built my own PC about 4 times (3 different rigs). The family know that I know a thing or 3 about PC's, but why is it anytime ANYONE they know mentions a problem with a PC, I am the one told and told to fix it, 90% of the time I dont want to, or have any intention to, and you can't charge family can you?

Fed up of it tbh, wish I never got into PC's because of that.

How it goes for me

1) Be told of a problem

2) Have no idea how problem is caused or how to fix it

3) Google the problem and read relevant information

4) Fix problem

Did you tell her you saw those nude pics she sent the other person ;)

Yes, he gives me the ride home from the pub....for £6...he has the cheek to charge, yet I'm expected to fix his PC for free, for the umpteenth time and yet another day off wasted. He dropped 2 grubby old machines off at my house to change a HDD. **** take.

And yeah, I've had a beer or 4.

He charges you for giving you a lift? Isn't that what "giving" a lift is? You know... as in for free.

Can't think of any friend or family member who'd do that. Wow. Say you'll trade lifts for PC fixes.

I do PC support for my parents, my sister, my grandparents and my close friends.

I don't charge anything, but I do insist they come to me first if they want to build a new PC or upgrade. This means I pick out the parts and they pay for them - so when something goes wrong (pretty rarely) I know exactly what I'm dealing with and can quickly sort out an RMA/replacement.

As for the OP - I have to agree, if your Uncle charges you for a lift then its only fair that he stumps up to compensate you for your time, effort and expertise.

I do a format and reinstall for my brother in law and brother every year or so. They manage to use their computers so that it eventually runs like it's grinding itself along bloated with all sorts of junk and nasties. Just easier to format and reinstall rather than fix the state it's in. Keep telling them to stay off the porn or wise up on how to browse/download it safely but same thing happens every year.

I think there are a lot of us that are "The I.T. Guy" in our families. I don't mind helping people out but it annoys me when they don't seem to appreciate it or they just take credit for fixing whatever problem themselves. I don't want money from my friends and family, I just want to be recognised for how much I help them out lol.

Some fat **** phoned me this morning asking me to re-install Windows 7 on his sister's laptop. I told him "Just put the DVD in and I'll tell you what to do over the phone". He replied "No. Do it for me" followed by exactly 30 seconds of whining and moaning before I told him to go suck himself and dozed back to sleep.

Saturday morning? Seriously?

I do it for most of my friends because I can't drive and they can.
I don't mind doing it usually, but once somebody blamed something I installed (called an antivirus) for their hard drive breaking. After that I told him to do one any they can fix it for himself then.

And that comic is horribly true. I got a phone call on Christmas day from a neighbor a few doors down to ask if I could set up their new HDTV -.-
