Currently have a Mondeo mk3 2.0 tdci. Runs just fine, plenty of mpg, cheap tax etc. I think its time I bought myself a half decent car. Something that wasnt a complete chore to sit it in on the long motorway miles I travel when I have to. I know pretty much everyone on here are diesel haters, but to be honest I quite like the power delivery you can get from a relatively small diesel. Not to mention the way fuel prices are continuing to go, its always nice to be touching at 40mpg if you can. I know when they do go wrong they are more expensive, but touch wood, I haven't had and diesel issues yet.

I'm after something that well built, cant stand dash rattles and squeaks. Quiet at motorway speeds. Goods seats. Plenty of leather and toys.
Budget of 8k to get myself something with a bit of presence, no older than 2006. newer if possible. So far I have narrowed it down to these 2 models.

Couple of mercs

Couple of S60s

Am I way off the mark are they both solid cars, if so I am drawn to the merc more than the S60. Try not to flame just for the sake of it. Im just making sure that the cars im interested in havent got any horrible common faults, ie wheels falling off over 70mph :)

I'd avoid that model of Mercedes.
Those C Classes weren't particularly well built, and they're not all that great on the whole either. That x220 CDI engine is a bit ****, too.

Out of those, I'd go for the S60 every time.

FWIW, what's your annual mileage? Might not be worth running a diesel with the potential large bills just to save a few bob on fuel and tax.

Milage varies drastically. I'm a consultant so it depends where my boss sends me. One year it was around 15k. Year before last 25k.

Pretty set on a smoker though. I know a vast majority of people won't understand why but just my preference.

i see a real world average of about 26/27 mpg on my Petrol T5

30 + on the motorway.

I'd take the MPG hit and have the petrol please. 130k miles and going strong.

The S60 fits the brief you've specified perfectly. Just look out for one with as many options as you can.

Yep, head says the S60. Just always liked the front of those mercs and the badge.

My neighbour had the T5 estate, leather, all the toys, 2 year old car. It was a very nice nice place to sit and nice engine as well.

Ignore second fella down, facelift W203 is a very well built car - the Pre 2004 facelift ones are a bit rubbish.

The 220CDI Engine is fine for what it is, a 4 pot 150bhp Diesel.

Pick of the bunch is a 320CDI.

Interesting shout on the 320 cdi there. Seems they get around 30mpg around town and 40-45mpg on long runs. Not bad at all

The Sport Edition C Class from 2006 on is a very nice motor. I drove a friend's loads of times on some very long journeys and apart from being underpowered (his was only a 180K) it was a really nice drive - smooth, quiet, cornered smartly but didn't have the crashy ride you get with a 3 Series Sport. It replaced a 2004 C180K Elegance and the facelift car was noticeably better put together.

He swapped it for a new C180K Sport in 2008 and I maintain the older one was nicer to drive. I've been keeping an eye out for a C320 CDI Edition Sport for myself but they still seem to be fetching around £13-£14k for a decent one and I can see them shedding half that money inside 2 years.
