CORSAIR 520watt with 480GTX....

Don't think your corsair 520watt PSU would have a 8-pin PCI-express cable & 6 pin PCI-express cable that needed to power a GTX 480

But even if it did,,I very much doubt 520watts would be anywhere near enough for an overclocked Q6600 cpu and GTX 480

As overclocked Q6600 cpu's draws stupid amounts of power..

Of course it has it - it has dual 8 pin PCI Express connectors as you'd expect any half decent PSU made in the last few years to have :)

I think it should be ok. That's a decent PSU, and if you can connect it up with the right cables, it should be able to handle it.

Ok sooo 1 No and 1 Yes and one I have the connections.....may have to miss the 480GTX deal...
Make that 0 no and 2 yes ;)

479watts

Can't you limit the power draw with some software?
If you buy an EVGA 480 they will replace it even if you kill it with your PSU - i'm guessing you're going for the Asus deal right?

I wouldn't. I mean the evidence is in the thread already, 479 watts isn't necessarilly good news considering thats a different system to yours, your cpu is overclocked, you may have different peripherals etc and its close to the margin as it is.

Obviously its up to you, but as per the other thread in GH - i can't see why you're not going for the 6950 tbh.

Seems obvious, because the 480 is faster

Both at stock, yep, i'd agree. But, two main options are:

480 195.00, would most likely need a new psu to run it properly. Would certainly need a new PSU if he ever upgraded any of his other kit. Heat and noise (noise is subjective of course)

6950 210. No new PSU, no risk of damaging current PSU. Flash to 6970. Speed gap minimal here (may even be faster, never looked at benchies of it vs 480 tbh). Quiter, and cooler.

OP, obvioulsy you should do what you think you'll benefit from most. But my advice would be not to automatically leap for the 480 just becuase there's a deal on.

I ran a GTX480, then a GTX580 on my Corsair HX520 without any problems. Assuming you have the "HX520" model, it has been proven to pull over 600W. It is the best sub 600W PSU money can buy.

But, it may limit system overclocks if you have a highly tuned quad core processor and an overclocked 480.

It has 2x8pin PCI-E cables and each one is specified to supply a minimun of 150W. GTX480's pull 250W so you do have some free room to play with but not much.

A GTX480 will pull up to about 330-350 watts and I would recommend a PSU that can supply at least 5-10% over that.

What is the Corsair rated for on the 12 rail ? what's your full system spec ?

That's what you need to know.
