Not looking for any type of argument however this is something I’ve seen mentioned a few times on here (and not always positively either) and I’m wondering what the general take is on this..
Why are gamers all of a sudden so obsessed with a big collection of achievements? Right, I’ll quantify this, why are ‘most’ gamers seemly so obsessed with getting that little ‘ding’ whilst playing a game and a pop up saying ‘you’ve got so and so as a reward’, and furthermore playing a game over and over again to obtain the little rewards?
Ok, furthermore why are gamers so obsessed with these here live gamer scores? Then this got me thinking…
Remember back in the good old days of ‘high scores’? We don’t tend to see this anymore, so is the achievements system a replacement for the high score systems we used to have back in the 8 and 16 bit days?
Granted, some of the games of today still have some type of scoring system, mostly arcade live or PSN titles etc.. but the majority of mainstream AA+ titles have little in terms of high scores..
I was guilty only the other day of unconstructive comments in regards to the gamer score or achievements system however maybe that isn’t quite so justified? Is the achievements system just a way to keep a game alive? Or replace the high score systems of days gone by? Maybe its just as I thought, and a way to stroke ego’s and really not worth a damn, and just a ridiculous idea that adds nothing to a game?
I’ve never really played a game in the intentions of looking to obtain achievements, or trophies to PS3 owners, however GT5 and Mass Effect 2 has seen me clock up trophies for doing nothing more then playing the game…
I don’t know, be interesting to see what everyone else thinks of the achievements system. I’m not looking to say ‘useless system, get rid etc’ I’m just trying to get a discussion going and no malice on the idea is intended….
