Not looking for any type of argument however this is something I’ve seen mentioned a few times on here (and not always positively either) and I’m wondering what the general take is on this..

Why are gamers all of a sudden so obsessed with a big collection of achievements? Right, I’ll quantify this, why are ‘most’ gamers seemly so obsessed with getting that little ‘ding’ whilst playing a game and a pop up saying ‘you’ve got so and so as a reward’, and furthermore playing a game over and over again to obtain the little rewards?

Ok, furthermore why are gamers so obsessed with these here live gamer scores? Then this got me thinking…

Remember back in the good old days of ‘high scores’? We don’t tend to see this anymore, so is the achievements system a replacement for the high score systems we used to have back in the 8 and 16 bit days?

Granted, some of the games of today still have some type of scoring system, mostly arcade live or PSN titles etc.. but the majority of mainstream AA+ titles have little in terms of high scores..

I was guilty only the other day of unconstructive comments in regards to the gamer score or achievements system however maybe that isn’t quite so justified? Is the achievements system just a way to keep a game alive? Or replace the high score systems of days gone by? Maybe its just as I thought, and a way to stroke ego’s and really not worth a damn, and just a ridiculous idea that adds nothing to a game?

I’ve never really played a game in the intentions of looking to obtain achievements, or trophies to PS3 owners, however GT5 and Mass Effect 2 has seen me clock up trophies for doing nothing more then playing the game…

I don’t know, be interesting to see what everyone else thinks of the achievements system. I’m not looking to say ‘useless system, get rid etc’ I’m just trying to get a discussion going and no malice on the idea is intended….

That little "ping" in the corner is better than an orgasm.

The only achievements I actively go for outside of any obtained from a normal play through are the ones in COD games.

I like all the ones like "kill Castro with a headshot", "Kill 7 monkeys in under 10 seconds" etc etc. They add a little more life to a short campaign game. Then there is the obvious vetran ones, that are a grind but are enjyoyable at the same time.

EDIT: I tell a lie, Dead Rising 1/2 as well, I love hunting for achievments in those games.

Oh and I prefer achievements to trophies.

I think that to some it's an easy way to show friends what games they have played, and how far they have progressed in them. I suppose it saves people having to remember which games they've played, I know that I can't remember all of mine.

For me, I couldn't care less about them. I don't remember ever chasing a trophy, they just pop up every now and again. Like you say, it is funny when you get a trophy or achievement just for starting the game, but on the whole I have no problem with them.

I'm addicted to trophies. I don't always get 100% but I try. :) I do wish they did more like unlock features I'd like to seem them used in this way say you get 100% in Infamous extra features will given to you in Infamous 2.

I think they add to a games lifespan.

Before achievements I'd play through a games main story, and then I'd move on.

With achievements it gives me incentive to replay it again and try and do some things a bit differently, or in ways I'd never usually bother to do.

I don't really give a crap about my gamerscore, it's the sense of 'achievement'.

I like getting an achievement/trophy but i'm not that fussed about them. I won't spend ages trying to get all the stupidly hard ones. Hence why my gamerscore is just over 10000 after having my xbox for 4 years!

I also love the trophey/achievment sounds. :o

They put me off though, I was on Hot Pursuit last night, and when they go off I couldn't stop looking in the corner to see what I had done.

I love the really hard ones like reach lvl 50 on hoard for gears 2, though Seriously 2.0 is just ridiculous.

Getting that Platinum is better than getting 100% for Achievements in games because;
a) it's an extra trophy
b) the platinum isn't taken away once the inevitable DLC is release like on xbox

That last one is annoying,

Don't care for trophies but don't mind going out of my way for some achievements if I really like the game. I think trophies implementation is really lame compared to XBL, I own a PS3 but don't care for them at all.

That last one is annoying,

Nothing gets taken away from you because you don't get platinums on XBL, 1000/1250g still means you completed it fully, aside from (often) crappy DLC.

Comparing trophies is aids anyway, Sony still haven't gotten that implementation correct. Waiting for trophy sync, yawn.

that is so true... I've to get the 'ding' and you then look in the corner to see what i've just got and drove off the track or something... lol you can't help it, such a distraction...

Seems some do like trophies and achievements etc..... Mostly for prolonging the game..!!

That little ding when you unlock a trophy is like a a little motivator. Also, it makes me explore the game more. Take Fallout New Vegas as an example. There are different ways to get to the games conclusion and there are trophies to complete the game in a number of different ways. Usually I would one storyline and move on but as well as getting another trophy, I can see different outcomes due to in game decisions.

I've found that sometimes Trophies take ages to pop up whereas most of the achievements I've gotten on XBL/GFWL have pinged straight away. One other thing that bugs me is that on the PSN even though it tells you how many trophies of each type you've collected and a "level" that's not really a very good gauge on how well you're doing, I'd like to see an overall score implemented similar to what they have on XBL.

This as it definately makes you play longer & get more value for your money out of the game it really extends its life but at the same time developers are also guilty of putting some OTT achvs which require Xlive Gold & a lot of MP play to get them. Sometimes I give up as playing the same game for months on end just to get an Achv is seriously time consuming !!!

I like the trophies I get along the way. Although sometimes I have to Google to see what I did to trigger it, as I don't actively pursue them. I'm quite take it or leave it with gaming anyway, I don't have the inclination to sit long enough to unlock them all.

Little Big Planet has high scores, and I have no idea how some people can score that much!

I love and loath achievements, I get a bit addicted and hate games not being 100% - and sometimes will play games I don't enjoy just to get them. I've got better over time though and now don't care as much - but it's never about comparing to other people, I don't want a high score to show off; I never check other peoples scores as I don't care - but personally I like to feel like ive done 100%!!

The noise indeed is awesome, and feels so good!! Wish they were not all such a grind / ridiculous though - some of the earlier games had silly ones... Reach #1 in World Rank!!

I dont care about the gamer score, but having it tell me that i've got 70% of the available stuff is nice.

I just wish i could remove games from my Trophy list. EG Fifa 09 which i barely played and got 3% in and will never ever play again.
