Thanks work - Rubbish hire car

So you'll zoom through the first bit from wherever you are to Brum, then join the start of the Brum rush hour?

May as well stay in bed for another 3 hours and hit the tail end of the Brum rush hour. You won't get there that much later, maybe an hour later, but that's still wasting 3 hours just to get there an hour earlier.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but sod that.

So fly from a different airport or fly to Dusseldorf or Essen or somewhere. There are loads of airports in that area. I can't think of a single situation where driving from Birmingham to Cologne is an easier solution both time and effort wise.

BMI Baby fly direct to Cologne from East Midlands. Slogging through Europe as an alternative to 30 miles from Nuneaton to the airport...

Why would you possibly choose a nice stress free flight, most probably in business class with a meal, over driving yourself to Eurozone and then complain about the car you are given.

Do any companies approve business travel for short haul for non execs these days? I'd like to work for one.

Agree with the rest of the points. Strange thought process to drive to Germany instead of flying...are you a nervous flyer OP?

Mine will offer to fly me if it's a trip to Scotland, but not to, say, Hull. I generally prefer to drive though due to the aforementioned problems with illness and the like.

Last Scotland trip I took the sleeper train which was an, umm, interesting experience. Wouldn't do it again unless they let me go first class though.

Jesus guys, its not like its 2000 miles or something.

I really enjoy driving, its less than 500 miles so it won't be difficult, plus I get to chill on the ferry half way.

Also I get paid my travelling time so it's not like I'm losing out.

OP, You have have too much time on your hand. Use the "I love driving" excuse all you want, but 2 hour flight compare to 11 hours drive...really?

If you check in at 9am, flight is at 10:30, you can be having lunch in Germany by mid afternoon. A little shopping, and have a nap in the hotel, cocktail at the bar and then bed.

Vs

9am leave the house, drive to Dover for the ferry or Eurotunnel, then across half of Europe, stopping at numerous gas stations for some fast food or sandwiches. Eventually get there at Midnight or so...And then have to do the trip back.

Life is short, why spend it stuck on the road?

I can't believe you let 1 airport hiccup put you off flying.

It wasn't one airport hiccup, it was several. It actually took me less time to get here than last time with much less stress, no stupid airport security, no standing on a train for 3 hours. I left my house at 11, stopped 3 times for a stretch, had dinner on the ferry and got to make calls and texts which you can't do on a plane. I still have plenty of fuel left too, I'll need to fill up before the return journey.

Where is that everything went better than expected jpeg when you need it?

Sadly it's really cold here, even a bit of snow this morning, don't think it will be open. :(

Though I did get the rental to 100 mph on the auto bahn, felt like it was going to shake me to pieces, then I moved over and a Civic Type R shot passed at about 150. Most of the time I was doing 90 and still loads of people going much faster.

444 miles, 32.27 litres one way, 26.26 litres coming back. genuine 38mpg coming back and i didnt drive any different to usual.

on the way there, due to a couple tools crashing on the m25 and m1 i had to make up time, i cleared 120 miles in approx 1hr 35
