Family + Pc Nerd...

I work on my family and friends pcs from time to time when they have had problems, and I don't charge anything, however, one of my friends who I have helped out several times is a mechanic, so I get the benefit of a nice skills exchange, I changed over a hard drive and backed up all his documents etc, while he was working on changing the cylider head on my car...methinks I' did best out of that!!!!

I did also compensate him in the currency of gregs, two sausage rolls and 2 iced buns, not a bad price for about 14 hours of work!!! lol

My family arn't that bad. I don't mind them ringing me up and asking - it's not like they've never done anything for me.

My GF neighbour always come to me with their PC problems, but they pay me in beer :D
 
Well, if a really fit bird asks you to sort their laptop. And you know they're the sort that will have a folder full of pics with their knockers out. Its a good idea yea?

Morally and legally, really bad, but jackpot.

Seen someones laptop which had a weird icon on the desktop called 'Hardware Installation'. Right clicked it wondering what it was and it was a folder.
Now that was a jackpot right there! And i wasn't even looking for anything!

Also had to recover everything from a mates hard drive, like a really close mate. He knows I've now seen pictures of his ex gf naked, a girl i used to go to school with. But he didn't lose all of his pictures/videos of him snowboarding in Canada so he doesn't care because we're so close.

Stalky McStalk, I bet you saved them all to your computer as well huh? Crack one out to them, am I right?
 
Just wrote out a single page of instructions and sent to my dad, on how to download teamviewer.exe from my webhost and install it on his laptop. Much better than faffing about getting him to install TightVNC or UltraVNC/configuring it and configuring his router firewall rules.

Was up and running on his machine in 5 minutes and I was able to connect to him remotely.

Win win :)

I can now do everything myself instead of giving him instructions over the phone.

Cant rate this piece of software enough for a quick and easy job with minimal hassle, perfect for installing on family members PC's.

Because he would end up phoning me up after getting stuck in a 4 page installation wizard ;)

Seriously, he gets stuck on the simplest of things. Yet anything he uses for work he is fine with.

I was actually quite surprised he phoned me up and was ready to give me the TeamViewer pin ready for connection :)
 
Did I tell you guys about the time I fixed a mate's sister's boyfriend's laptop? I got paid for it (obviously) but among the files being backed up I noticed horse porn....and big black booty porn.

We use Teamviewer and LogMeIn at work. Excellent.

Doesn't help if the internet is down though :p
 
My dad is hopeless with technology.
This weekend he said his digital TV didn't work anymore, all I needed to do was take out the Smartcard and insert it again.
The week before he said his remote didn't work anymore, turns out he pushed a button at the top that makes the TV remote operate a DVD.
And the week before that said his wireless printer stopped working which was caused by his router which was fixed after a reboot.

I could be annoyed that I had to help him out 3 times but on the other hand if I need help I know he will never ever say no to me so I don't mind so much.
 
I usually find that for friends and family I get a nice bottle of whiskey or a crate of beer. Or at the very least a nice meal whilst I fix it. It's no trouble and what's the point knowing this stuff if you can't help out your family and mates?
 
Just finished my first session on TeamViewer to sort out a 100% CPU load issue on my dads laptop.

Got a question though, TeamViewer seems pretty laggy sometimes, even though I set optimised for speed, and my connection is (19mb down/1.4 up) my dads is (15mb down/1mb up) both have good pings.

Is this the norm with TeamViewer? or is it usually quite responsive?

If you wondering if the 100% CPU load was the issue for the lag, no it wasnt, overall though I would recommend it for sorting out the family niggles.

I am not going to install it on my "on the side" customers machines though which I charge £25/hour for though, for obvious reasons ;)
