Well, the three year itch (upgrade cycle) will be upon me in April this year.

This is when I usually replace all my components and start afresh.

I feel that this year it will be a little different as there are one or two things I think I will keep hold of for any new build.

Here is my current Rig:

• Intel Core 2 Quad LGA775 Q6600 GO SLACR clocked @ 3.2 GHz
• Tuniq Tower 120 LED
• Abit Quad GT X38 Motherboard.
• 4 GB (4 X 1) Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500C5 DDR2
• Silverstone TJ09 full tower Case with side window
• Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU
• Sapphire 4870 X2 clocked @ 750 MHz Core
• Western Digital Caviair 1TB Black
• Akasa blue LED sata cables.
• NEC Dual layer SATA DVD R/RW drive
• Internal Silver Card reader / USB port.
• Razer Copperhead (blue) mouse
• Saitek Eclipse II LED keyboard
• Dell 2407 (revision A04) 24” TFT

I don't feel the need to replace the following:

• Silverstone TJ09 full tower Case with side window
Its big roomy and silent....I love it.

• Razer Copperhead (blue) mouse
• Saitek Eclipse II LED keyboard
• Dell 2407 (revision A04) 24” TFT

Had these for a good few years now, but seriously, other than perhaps a move to a brand new Dell U2711 (£550 ) I don't feel the need to change .

This leaves us with the core components.

PSU
Mobo
CPU
CPU Cooler
Memory
Graphics Card
HDD
Operating System?

All to replace and to be honest, I am a bit lost...other than knowing Sandybridge is the current CPU king

Money wise....I don't have money to burn, but on the other side, I do tend to go for quality as you buy right you don't buy twice....so not the "sky's the limit" but not on a shoe string either

Any advice most welcome, thanks in advance.

Replace the GPU for a nice 570/6950. The 6950 can be flashed to a 6970. There's also a 480 for under £200, and that's an absolute bargain!

I would wait for April to upgrade the CPU, as Bulldozer and revised Sandybridge chipsets should be out then.

And maybe you should jump to Windows 7, I feel it's a lot better then Vista when I made the jump.

If you have a bit more cash then maybe a SSD?

Dont upgrade in april cos by then the 7000 series of gpu will be only a few months away plus your rig is fine for another year or so.

I doubt that, I can imagine the 7000 series being released in Nov/Dec... plus April is a nice time to upgrade anyway.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Orcvader, are you referring to this 480?

Sounds like its a little loud and runs hot...the exact reason I got the 4870x2 with the Accelero on.

As for an SSD, I put one in my Dell Mini 9, which was a 32Gig unit and it zooms along.
But for your main rig, I think at the moment the storage sizes are a little on the low side for me....I have over 60 Gig of music and lots of home movie files to keep (admittedly they are backed up on my NAS)

Hmmm, sounds like the CPU dust has yet to settle...perhaps waiting for a major overhaul would be prudent ?

I used the Gainward 480 for a while and the system was no hotter or noisier than any other card I owned.

Well you can upgrade the GPU now to a 560/570/6950 if you want, depending on your budget.

As for the CPU I think it's best to wait, depends on how fast Intel can sort their chipset problem with Sandybridge.

For the storage, maybe you can get yourself a few of these: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-097-SA&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1279

Hmm...I guess I would get something for my 4870x2 to put towards a new GPU.

As for storage, I have just purchased one of these:

To go with my current SATA II WD 1TB Black drive...will attempt to go Raid ;)
