ok, managed to get the athlon stable at 3.6GHz (aint tried to push any higher yet as i want to make sure everything else is right) but im a bit concerned about the ram. i have been reading a lot of people saying the timing and settings on the ram make very little real world difference to performance, but thought i would double check.
this is what cpu-z is showing whislt under load :

as you can see, the default settings are nowhere near what the recommended timings are. should i leave as is, or try and get it to its proper settings?

cheers in advance.

also, when doing an AMD OC, what needs to be changed? so far i have changed the FSB and the CPU Voltage (but not by a lot). but i have been reading about the HT needing to be changed too. is this correct, if so whats the best way to go about it?

With the motherboard your using the Athlon II X2 245/250 and good quad core unlockers

Find the UCC option in bios and get the baby unlocked to X3 or X4

yeh, although for what i use it for i dont think the extra cores will benifit me too much. and worst case i can always buy a phenom x4 and oc it. but as i have the x2 now, want to make the most of it, and possibly save myself some money.
its stable at 3.6GHz and the temps dont go over 42 whilst being stressed, and dont go over 34 whilst gaming, which im happy with. havent attempted to go higher yet as i want to make sure all the settings are right now, like the ram running properly. once i know everything is correct, i can then go higher. havent done an amd system always been intel in the past, and my only real oc was on my old i7, so really need advice on which bios settings should be touched, what they should be like (whether there are any ratios between certain settings) and then i can play.

i have done 13 hours OCCT without issues so i know that the fact the cpu is running at 3.6GHz is stable (well as stable as a random test will be) but i want to make sure the ram is running as fast as it should be, i want to make sure that i get the best out of every component, not just a big number for the cpu.

no one person can tell you what your system will do, no 2 part work the same just keep pushing it till you get a fail test, but use prime95 and run ram testing occt is not the best testing tool.

just keep pushing up your FSB in 5 or 10's till you get a fail.
Prime 95 will tell you what failed then you can work on that part of the system

im happy with my cpu speed, its the ram settings im not sure on, do i leave it on auto (which is nothing like what cpu-z profiles say it should be) or do i try and set it to one of the cpu-z profiles (if so which one) or will any changes to ram have a knock on effect to the cpu overclock.

most parts like RAM, North Bridge (NB), Hipper Link (HL) Work on a ratio system with the CPU FSB. Witch is way i keep sating push up the FSB and test till you hit the max your system can take then back off a little add some Vcore and NB voltage. retest and be happy. 1333mhz ram should not really pass 1600 without extra cooling.

i'm unsure to what the temps etc should usually be on your rig as i'm unfamiliar with the dual core, so it would be useless for me to comment other than to bring your thread back to the top of the new posts screen for others to see and comment on

upped the voltage to AMDs max recommended and still unstable with 250 FSB, so its looking like 3.6GHz is its limit for some reason, which is unfortunate as temps isnt an issue at all on stock cooler :(

none of the athlon II x2 245 or 250's will unlock, they are all regor core chips so are only dual core and not quads with disabled cores.

3.6 seems about average without sticking higher vcore through the athlon II x2's, you should definitely change your ram off auto and set it to the setting that gives you the closest to 1333mhz in the bios.

3.6 on an athlon II x2 isn't low its average :)

set your ram to 533mhz in the bios and it should bring it to around 640mhz with your overclock.

i meant in general, its not a huge increase from 3GHz-3.6GHz, but i guess any gain is good, especially from such a cheap chip. if i invested in a X4 Phenom, would the improvments be greater, ie, a 3GHz chip hitting nearer the 3.8-4GHz?
