Achievements and Trophies…

Why is it sad to do something you enjoy? The xbox guy is aiming to get 1 million gamerscore btw.

I wouldn't take it to that level but enjoy achievements. I play some games more than I would if there werent achievements - for example playing the harder difficulties etc. I also play games that you dont get achievements for ie BLOPs multiplayer etc... its just horses for courses really.

I enjoy trophies too as i mentioned above, those guys are taking it to extremes though, buying terrible games just to get the platinums/1000g. The ps3 guy even imported Winning Eleven (The japanese titled Pro Evo Soccer) So he would get 2 platinums for playing the exact same game. There cant be much enjoyment playing awful games just to boost your score.

I like them when they're done well. The only game I've got 1000 on so far is Arkham Asylum, but the achievements there are actually fun as well as challenging. I'm close to 1000 on Forza 3 as well, but that means getting gold on every event which is a monster time sink.

I also dislike the really online heavy ones, as I prefer single player. The achievement list for gears is ridiculous, for example.

Adds longevity on games for me sometimes. Before GS I would play a game on normal and move on. Never looked for extras or levelled up.

Even know I can easily leave an achievement I think is more than worth my time.

I do not understand boosting. I don't mind a quick 5 minutes to unlock something but won't put in hours of boosting effort. I've seen people from here spend 20 hours or more in lobbies on Assassins creed or bioshock 2 boosting with mates, effectively not playing the game while a mate rapes kills. That I see as a complete waste of my gaming time.

Or spending 10 hours or more replaying the one section of gears 2 to get 100,000 kills. Why not use your time playing the game.

Each to their own I suppose. I guess we just have differing limits on how much we would spend ripping off an achievement :D

I do agree - I have played "less than great" games in the past but the whoring has worn off a bit for me so now I try to only play good games.

I'd like to get 100k this year, its a fun target I've set myself not playing (too many) cruddy games :)

Achievements/Trophies don't really bother me. The only ones I have are the ones you get through normal gameplay. Only platinum I have is for ratchet and clank crack in time, as you pick it up for just doing everything the game has to offer :) (Hard mode + challenge mode + collect all upgrades).

I don't think they add any replay value, if the games worth replaying then it's because it's good, not just to get a trophy/achievement.

I also dislike how they seem to have become the reward for doing things :(. Last gen for doing a game a specific way or finishing it on a certain difficulty you got something fun for it :), like weapons or costumes etc. Now all you seem to get is an achievement/trophy and any extras like weapons are sold to you as dlc :(.

Didnt Sony add trophies after the launch of the PS3 due to the popularity of Achievements

Pretty sure they did, but games such as the Ratchet games on PS2 had an acheivment system way befroe the 360. Im pretty sure there are earlier versions of this but XBL made it easy to show your scores to other people. Im not bothered about trophies that much, ill play a game see what ones i can get that dont seem much of a grind. Hate multiplayer ones especially those that want you to be in say the top 1% on a leadboard etc.

Trophies are a great addition and as has already been said above they extend the life of a game!!

They are the reason I ask for games such as MGS4 to include a trophy update.....so I can reply the game and seek some personal awards on my profile for achieving certain goals....things I wouldn't normally be overly interest in doing....collecting items etc. I have completed so many games over the years and then moved on to the next. Trophies expend the life of a game and add tasks away from the main story.

I don't collect trophies because I want to feel like I am scoring highly against my mates or anyone else, I do it for a challenge or to reply a good game.......lets be honest.....having more trophies than a person is not the same as having a high score. A high score would show your skilled at that certain game whereas having more trophies simply means you have more time to sit on the PS3 than I do or have more money to be able to afford more games....your average dole head will beat me in trophy count any day :)

To those saying they like achievements but don't like trophies, what is the difference?

*Geniune question, not argument seeking ;)

Never used a PS3 but I imagine because it's simplier. 224 bronze 45 silver 6 gold or just one number 3456.

One shows the level of skill and number of games fully completed and ones just some random number that dont mean anything. I guess in an RPG would you rather see your character have 5000 XP or be at level 12?

But then theres levels, e.g im 76% of lvl 12 one of my mates is level 12 but hes only 24% through it, so therefore i know in the superior human being :p

My only gripe with xbox achievements is theres no discernable difference between a "bronze" achievement and a "gold" achievement, it just adds to your score.

You can still look at the specific achievements and figure it out that way, but I concede that that does mean drilling down further into someone's gamerscore.
