Engagement ring

I'll be taking the plunge in the next 9 months or so.

Was thinking about browsing the Jewellery quarter in Birmingham, but wondering if these class as what's been referred to in here as 'high-street'?

Be very careful if shopping in the Jewellery Quarter, make sure you know what you are looking for and only buy certified diamonds (if you go that route) ;)

One of my ex's sisters got engaged to a guy with far more money than sense, he bought her a ring that was valued at almost £7k, she sold that ring and bought a cheap copy of it that she wore, he was none the wiser for years until they finally split-up and he was pestering her for the ring back, she did him a deal for a jointly owned Car, she got the Car, he got the ring back. I bet his face was a picture when he got it valued to try and sell it...Women are pure evil.

Cheers for that, I'd have presumed that everything there would all be above-board so to speak.

Looks like there's a lot of research to be done!

Right so I've done a little research and looked online and just this min got back from "high st" How comes I can pick a diamond and get it set on bluenile for £1kish, But go to high street and have to pay £3k for a diamond which is the same carat, isn't cut as well, has a G colour (instead of D/E) and has a lower clarity grade also? surely they can't be ripping people off that much?

I'm confused lol.

Whether it is platinum, white gold, silver, haribo or onion - just make sure you're proposing for the right reasons :)

She is withholding sexy time and demanding marriage or you get drought.

Caught between a rock and a hard place :D

The only 'rule' worth following is buy what you can afford. If you have to get a loan or buy on the never never, then you're spending too much.

I think I paid about £1650 in 2004.

Agreed. A lot of women would prefer the extra money to be saved for the future. I spent just over half a months salary on my other half's engagement ring and whilst she loved it, she gave me stick for not getting a cheaper one. You can't please them!

traditionally its supposed to be around 3 months wages

Since when? Traditionally it was as much as you could afford to spend and more often than not it wasnt even a ring you got, then a marketing campaign by De Beers started bumping it up to 1-2-3 months, have a read of this article http://www.slate.com/id/2167870/

As for me, i proposed with a crappy plastic ring (though it was just after midnight below the Sydney Harbour Bridge on New Years Eve/Day) as i knew my better half wanted to pick her own. I didnt have a problem with that as it was what she wanted and i wanted her to be happy with it. There was no price limit and she designed the ring herself from a few she saw as we went around looking (Amsterdam, Thailand etc). She's happy with it and it's her most prized possesion. She's happy, i'm happy!

It's knowing what you are buying that's part of it... same as most people with computers / cars on OCuk. In addition to that, these jewellers are diamond dealers, i.e. they get a lot better prices as they buy diamonds and metal separately, and then set themselves.

i said traditionally! trust me as a female i have had it drummed into my head from all other older women when i got engaged that it should cost that much!
I on the other hand picked mine and it wasnt anywhere near that much.
