Upcoming (packaged) VW service - will they use crap oil?

When I bought my car last year I also bought VW's 3 year some-parts-and-labour servicing deal, which includes an oil change.

Can I expect them to use crappy oil, rather than some kinder synthetic stuff?

If so, will they attempt to rip me off on an oil upgrade and is bringing your own oil the done thing in this kind of situation?

Thanks!

Your VW dealer can order good oil in massive quantities so it doesnt matter its part of a service package.

Heck if you're unlucky it will be like my volvo. Volvo only recommends my T5 be filled with Castrol SLX Professional for Volvo engines, a specifc A5/B5 formulation of Castrol 0W30 oil available only from your volvo dealer.

They are only going to use that because thats all they recommend !

yup will be the synta stuff not "vw" stuff

you can actually get genuine vw oil but its ridiculously expensive even at trade prices

I'd love to know what the difference was between this 'Volvo oil' and something like Castrol Edge 0W 30, odds are very very little.

normal castrol is A3/B3

The volvo stuff is A5/B5

so its ever so slightly thinner. I did ask simon about the risks of using the A3/B3 stuff and he couldnt comment :D

It's got the A3/B3 stuff in it atm and it seems fine.

Interesting, I could be wrong since i haven't looked for ages but doesn't the normal magnetic stuff meet A5/B5 standards and that's fully synth?

If your in leafy Cheshire you might want to try Chester TPS for your service stuff, recently did a service on my Ibiza TDi and got 5 litres of Quantum Synta Gold for £29 and a Oil Filter for £4

Castrol Magnatec does

but only comes in 5W30 not 0W30.

They say Castrol 0W30.

I agree there are other oils in the range that will do, but volvo only recommends an oil you can buy from them.

I thought I explained this in the last thread.

It's the only oil Volvo recommend as its the only one they have tested in their own in-house tests.

OP, what's the car?

As above, we would use the exact same oil as if you were buying from us normally than a service plan. The only difference being is that your first service will probably be just an oil change (literately, just change the oil and reset the service light) So make sure to ask for an EVC / Express vehicle check which is free And basically you will get the same level of inspection to your car as you would with an inspection / longlife service but its free.
May i ask what dealer your going to?

Well thats how genuine oils work. It's hardly a conspiracy.

If you asked an oil to do double the drain interval you would at least want to know it was capable.

and this stops castrol making 4 Litre tubs of it available for general sale to the public how ?

Readily available in BMW spec, but not Volvo spec.
