So my Swift is coming up to its second birthday and has done about 17K miles. (base model, paid 7750 for it new, think its worth about 5K private now)

I've recently started doing a lot more travelling for work to the extent that I am now averaging about 1000 miles a month with 600 miles of that being business miles which I claim back 40p a mile for.

In these crazy petrol price times I'm getting 350 miles out of £50 worth of fuel (the Swift isn't that great economy wise, I get about 40mpg), so I'm actually coming out up about £100 a month on petrol alone. This kind of covers my insurance (which is a bit higher because of the business miles but not that much) and servicing, tax plus a bit. So my car works out costing me nothing on a month to month basis but obviously is depreciating.

Question is, how much difference is there going to be in a few years time if my car is about 5 years old and has done 55000 miles to if it had only done say 40000 miles which it was on course for before my increase in miles.

A 5 year old Swift is only going to be worth say 2K if im lucky right? so that amount of difference in miles can't be more than a few hundred or am I underestimating the difference in mileage?

40ppm is pathetic atm, given the cost of fuel and other running costs these days.

Its the maximum allowed by the revenue isn't it? or has it been increased since I last looked? I guess it would suck in a car bigger than my go kart :)

Well one of our companies only pays 34p a mile...luckily im employed by the parent company which pays the 40p

Is it? My ST220 costs about 18-20ppm in terms of fuel, so I'd say it's quite reasonable..?

It also has to cover the cost of tyres, additional business insurance, wear and tear on the car, contribution towards servicing costs and a contribution towards depreciation.

Work out the true cost per mile of your car. It wont be 20ppm.

Well yes, but I don't *just* use my car for business use, but I suppose a few hundred extra miles a year of business use is different to 600 a month.
