Hey there people, I have a problem with my computer and need some help.

About 6 months ago I built a new computer using kit from Overclockers. The computer comprised of:

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black edition 3.2 GHz
Corsair XMS 4 GB (2x2GB)
Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UDH3
Sapphire Radeon HD5830
OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W

I went out the other day and left it running, came back a bit later and the computer is off, my NAS, monitor and router were all still powered on and they run of the same plug extension block. I have never over clocked or altered anything on the rig, its all stock.

If I remove the power cable then replace and press the computer power button all the fans (CPU, case, GPU) turn a few revolutions and then stop, the power doesn’t latch on.

I have tried another power supply and that made no difference. I’m assuming it’s not the graphics card as it doesn’t even get that far into the boot sequence, it doesn’t even boot.

Any idea how I can diagnose this? Is it a motherboard or cpu?

Since you've tried another PSU it doees sound like the motherboard.. Try reseting the CMOS and/or replacing the CR2032 battery.

If it's only 6 months old, I would raise an RMA.

Usually by a process of elimination.

Any error beeps when booting? Attach a speaker if you don't have a case speaker.

When you say a few revolutions how long do they spin for? A few seconds? Less?

Could the graphics card do this? not that I overly suspect the card.

If i took the card out and then tried to power up, assuming the card was duff, would it try and post and fail or would it still sit there dead?

Double check all your fans too, a failed CPU fan depending on BIOS settings can cause the same thing, machine powers up, realises fan has failed then shuts down.

Yeah, sounds like mobo. Have you checked everything is plugged into the mobo OK and nothing is touching the board?

All other components wouldn't cause that problem if they were faulty - the fans would stay on and you would just get a blank screen, bleeps, etc. Power going off like that is PSU, mobo, bad connection somewhere or a short somewhere.

I had a similar problem on the same motherboard. Reset the CMOS and check internally for obvious damage. Try using the other RAM slots instead of the ones you are using too.

Another thing you could try, although probably not much use would be to remove everything that isn't necessary and just boot with 1 stick of ram and the HDD. If it posts but beeps error codes in your face then its not the mobo. It does sound like it is though.
