Category 5 Cyclone Yasi due to hit Cairns and Townsville

My aunt and uncle live just outside of Mackay, they brought a generator last week (following being cut off with the flooding) as they are very isolated out in the country so when they lost power they would be screwed as it's about 20 miles from the town.

Fingers crossed for them, it's been a bad year so far

I find it hilarious that the English constantly talk about the weather, when the worst we get is a few localised flooding, a couple inches of snow and may be 2 days a year above 30c.

This is real weather, England has it too easy and it is amazing how it is the subject of topic sooo often when it is mighty boring!

I miss hurricane seasons when I lived in Hong Kong, it was kind of exciting! (provided you live in a block of flats where it is designed to sustain hurricanes).

Without wanting to come across as a bit of a tool (I really feel for the poor barstewards in QL :(), is this an inappropriate place to ask if anyone's ever done a storm-chasing holiday? I've always fancied doing it but not had a clue where to look.... I was wondering about the practicalities too... It must get a bit uncomfortable if you need to use the toilet whilst stuck in the middle of an almighty storm...

I don't understand the mentality of the people who had the chance to leave but decided to stay. Take the person in question here:

Now how on earth did they think it was a good idea to stay? Were I living in Cairns, as soon as I heard the news this morning I'd have been packing up sentimentals and valuables, and been on the road within the hour.

Yasi will cover 1,000km of the Queensland coast and penetrate at least 400km inland.
