Title sounds crazy, I think Im going a little crazy....

Quite frankly, having recently moved house with no off street parking, I dont like leaving either my car, of my gf's car on the street (S2000 and R32 respectively). Someone recently removed some paint from my front bumper, I actually suspect council removing Christmas trees due to very localised area of damage. Regardless of cause, I have had some damage done and its goign to cost me to fix it. Ive seen an the parking skills of some neighbours and visitors, and quite frankly, it frightens me.

I enjoy living where I live, and Ive been in my house about a year, and moving somewhere else just for the sake of off street parking is ludicrous, albeit something Id like to do, but my gf would veto. Last year I did 2000 miles in my S, next to nothing, partly because Ive been busy doing odds and ends to the house and the Golf proves far more useful for everyday tasks. I cant remember the last time I went for a top down blast, Im simply not using it, which for a car like that is a bit of a shame.

The R32 is quick enough for London driving, and has enough toys that longer distance journeys are relaxing. Garaging my S2000 would be an additional expense, and probably mean I use it even less, so is lose lose.

So in a warped state of mind, Im thinking about giving a two finger salute to the parking idiots, and getting a Landy Defener, polar opposite to the S2000 I know. It would be rugged, unlikely to get damaged by parking numpties, suit my trips to the tip, Sainburys, B&Q and for general running around would be absolutely fine. Could handle a motorway run, but if I needed to go further I take the Golf.

Money isnt an issue, and you could argue for the money Id have to shell out for a Defender (these things just dont depreciate like other cars), I could get my S2000 resprayed countless times. And its not the cost thats the issue, its the time and inconvenience of getting reapir works done, and the worry of the freshly painted panels getting hit. Thus, with the Landy if I couldnt park outside my house, Id be safe in the knowledge that despite not being able to keep an eye on it, Id know it wouldnt be wearing some new dings or dents when I returned to it.

I fear I would miss performance, Im not a bling fan, but it seems you can get some performance enhancements (work to turbo, remap etc) that takes these things to 165-200bhp for less than £3k, and offer some economy gains and with the torque on offer, I doubt would feel that slow. 2000 miles in my S2000 gives you an idea of how little time I spent actually driving far afield last year, so its really just a utility car I need. Im finding the appeal of a Defender luring me in.....

Is there any logic to my madness, or am I simply cracking up?

You live in London. Will you ever use it for going even slightly off-road?

Very unlikey, that said, the roads are a real state here, and plus I have the Golf if I want to do anything medium to long distance.

Well for the last 6 years I've either had an Impreza or a Jeep Cherokee - 2 of each so far :)

I think the defender is a bit too agricultural and unless your going to use it off road you might want something with a few more creature comforts.

Jeep Cherokees are cheap and reliable - BUT the only one worth having is the 4.0L petrol and I don't need to tell you its not shy on the fuel. One with a decent LPG system will make the MPG "acceptable" from down right shocking (mine doesn't have LPG :D )

£1500 gets you an excellent example - electric seats, mirrors, ariel, heated mirrors, heated seats on some.

As an example. Orvis models were like limited edition run-off models.

Even old and a bit dog eared they just seem to have a certain class about them.

Ok, thanks

I should also have said that I need a relatively short vehicle, as it will be being parked on street, so I cant justify having something much longer than a Defender 90..... which then limits the choices a little.

I like to take pride in the cars I own, so dont want a beater as such. Nor do I want to buy the local bodyshops best customer, just because people cant park!

How about a short wheel base Shogun? Cheap, reliable and tough.

88 inches of pure pleasure :P.

Seriously though, don't. Far too agricultural for what you need!

Just accept that you car is going to get the occasional scrape and ding sadly it's part ond parcel of parking on the street or at the super market etc etc, shouldn't be but it is. Then if it really bothers you once a year pop it into the body shop, think of it as an extra on the mot. You will land up doing the same with the landy if you are really fussy about the paint work as people will still reverse into it and open doors against it etc. so buying a Landy won't make your problem go away.

Which is ironic because even these days they're pants for that compared to the competition :D Hence why Land Rover are mulling over what to do with the Defender.....

They are truely woeful cars. Noisy, unrefined and a pig to drive.

They are truely sensational off road vehicles.

Think of it like a tractor, a tool for a job. Not a car.

A mate of mine bought a long wheel base one in a high () spec a couple of years ago and we used it a bit for lads trips since it had so many seats. It was a horrible, noisy place to be and the finish is non-existant. They look like a bodged kit car inside.

I got a misguided mate like that, he's got a long wheel base green jobber, what a car, i cant think of a single redeeming feature on road.

I have spoken to a few people who have one of these as a second vehicle and they love them especially in the recent snow, One guy has a Porche Cayenne which he said was useless in the snow but his old defender which cost him £1500 was ideal in the snow, The other guy said exactly the same and he has a Range rover sport but preferred the Defender in the snow. also they are good for towing, 1 of the above guys was building a house and accidentally towed 8 ton of bricks in his defender, he said it didn't feel as if he was towing that amount and only realized when the trailer tire blew.

Both say that they always start and have never had any major issue's with them, If parts are needing replacing they are cheap to get and a lot of work can be done by the owner.

As a daily road car though it would probably not be practical.

Appreciate the replies, looks like this is going one way.

To clarify, this will not be a daily driver, and at the moment I use my S2000 once a weekend at most, it will be more of a toy. Most of the times I need a car, I am going to Ikea, the tip, the shops etc.

If I got one Id look to get some sound deadening, and some little mods to aim to make it a bit more driveable I suppose....

I guess it might be about the only vehicle that arguably looks ok with a dent or two and dirty, as from experience, cleaning bird droppings off of a soft top are a real pain, let me tell you!

So even with sound deadening, upgrades to ~170bhp and a car to have as a bit of a laugh.... you still think this is a crazy idea?

I think you need to go and have an extended test drive on the roads you will normally drive and see what you think.

You might be one of those people that actually like them.
