AMD Advice

i ditched my cheap free mobo and got an ASRock 890FX Deluxe3 mobo. the cpu supported list is quite extensive and pretty sure it covers most, might need to upgrade from 1.8 to 1.9 bios though for some.

I have had my 1090t for about 2 weeks now, coming from a q6600 on a board that didn't like to clock (3ghz max stable) to the 1090t on a board that does, I can only say that this processor is a great little processor. At stock it is quick enough but with them being able to do 4ghz easily, I went into the bios upped the multi and fsb a little and 4ghz was easy as pie.

To be honest any one of those processors in the list will give you a decent overclock and ample cpu power for gaming. If you are running lots of VM's, multi threaded apps etc then get a black edition X6... you wont be dissapointed.

Black edition have an unlocked multiplier so are easier to overclock. You only have to change the mutiplier (and voltage if you want) and not the bus speed to overclock.

the Phenom II X4 955 BE - £101.82** is all you need

dont get a Athlon if you can get a Phenom. the Athlon as no L3
Dont get the Phenom 965 it's the same chip as the 955 with the multiplier 1 notch hire.

The 6 cores are VVVV Good but games only use 2 or 3 cores now so would be a waste of cash.

But that just my view

I have a 965BE C2 @ 3.7ghz for daily use, it isn't enough for a lot of things. Sometimes it's a bottleneck for my Crossfire 5830s, which is rather annoying I can tell thee. Mainly older games though.

It's true that most games use 4 or fewer cores, but there are new games coming out all the time that can use more than that. Also the 965BE C3 is maxed at about 4.0ghz, and the 1100/1090t will often go far higher than that. I know a guy who runs 4.3ghz daily, 4.4ghz for benching.

Personally I wouldn't dream of getting a quad, I'd get an 1100/1090t. It's only £60 more than a 955, but it clocks further and the two extra cores will still be there when more games come out that can use them.

The X6 chips will be more future-proof, so save yourself some hassle and get one of those for the price diff. Both the 1090T and the 95W 1055T (don't even consider the 125W 1055T) will do 4GHz+ but you will need a decent motherboard, especially with the 1055T as this has a locked multi of x14. So you'll need a board that can do at least 285Mhz BCLK for that processor to hit 4GHz. Higher clock speeds are better for current games but in reality 3.6GHz is IMO enough for now. Preferable to go with the 1090T or 1100T as OCing is much easier with the unlocked "Black Edition" processors. Personally I think the 1090T is best buy at the moment.

I do not think that there is significant difference with the 95W or 125W 1055T from feedback I have got. Both can run equally cool and as I have noted mine will overclock above 3.5GHz while substantially undervolted.

I agree that the 1090T is a good pricepoint with the unlocked multi and definately better than the 1100T. These are 125W processors

I also agree that the motherboard and bios is very important to get the overclock.

If I was buying now I would get the 1090T

My experience is that the 95W version has about 250-300Mhz greater OC headroom.

4GHz 6 core sounds pretty nice :) whats the difference between the standard and the BE chips?

with the unlocked multiplier you can use a £60 board to get to 4Ghz with the unlocked x6 you have to get a board that will clock to approx 278fsb to get the same.

So when you cost it up there isn't much difference, if you already have a good mobo i would go for the 95w X6

what about waiting for the AMD balldozer?
Agreed - with bulldozer due in Q2 this year, now is probably not the best time to be buying a CPU. Even if bulldozer power isn't needed, it still maybe worth waiting as PhenomII prices will surely drop when it's released. But if he needs to buy now for whatever reason then 1090T is my vote.

It is so dependant on the processor, motherboard, cooling, clean power and user. I know of a 95W 1055T that needs higher volts than mine to get to 3.6GHz (in an asus board), I know of both types getting to 4.0GHz. It is not a simple equation. Some are better some are not and it is a gamble to pay the extra.

The 1055T 95W is so close in price to the 1090T that having the unlocked cores is a bonus.

1090T is still my choice or Bulldozer but that will cost

bulldozer will be far too pricey for me as will need a new mobo and all. not sure how good this mobo is for oc'ing but it has got my 250 up to 3.6GHz with no issues.

quoted for truth! :D

In fact it would be rude not to.

It would indeed be criminal to leave a BE at stock clocks... imo no sane man would do such a thing! why settle for 3.2 when 4ghz is so easy?

BTW talking of 95 vs 125w, mine i believe is a 125w and runs at silly cool temps

1090t at 4ghz / 2.8 ghz nb eats trough everything here , 7.11pts on cinebench faster 30% then i7 960 stock. also not that hard to overclock with multi unlocked.

Easy for some! Us C2 users do not find it easy I tell thee. 3.8ghz has always been my wall. 2.8ghz CPU-NB.
