Spec me a budget desktop speaker please :D

I don't expect them to shake the whole house, just some basic compact speakers in black and that the headphones does not make will make that irritating hiss if you know what I mean. I assume that with all cheap desktop speakers will hiss when using the headphone socket?

Thanks.

Thanks for all the recommendations.

Depends how what your "budget" is, before I can recommend any, but for very low cost:

Quite interested in the Logitech X-140 especially since it has a audio input on the speaker.
Does anyone know if the volume controls and headphone jack are on the right or left speaker? I presumed that it is the left but I googled this with conflicting results; some say right and some say left
Any X-140 owners here?

I've just had a look at mine and I can't see where it says left or right on either speaker, so I don't it matters. I have mine on the right.

To find out which is left and right, you could run a sound test in either the sound card control panel, or on-board audio, depending on which you have. Unless you are not fussed finding out if they are the wrong way round or not. :)

Does the speaker make a hissing type of sound regardless of whether you have volume turned down or not? I know you can only really hear a faint hiss if you use the headphone jack or putting your ear close to the speaker.

Pooley, do you think you can test this for me please ? :D If you use Windows 7; in the control panel there is a speaker test that will play sound out each speaker at a time. Thanks :)

From experience of various 2.0/2.1 speakers over the years, the controls have always been on the right speaker. Just looking at a picture someone's setup of the X-140's, the control speaker is on the right.

Done the speaker test and can confirm the controls are on the right speaker..

Regarding hissing, I can only hear a slight buzzing sound when I've put my ear to the speaker or when I put my DR50's in the headphone jack when volume is turned down.

try one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRAND-NEW-PLA...InternetTelephonyHeadsets&hash=item53e4a5ad59
plug it into the rear outputs.
front panel audio = very hissy
plug headset into speakers = some hiss from the speaker circuitry
with this splitter the hiss (if any) is minimal and you can plug in mic as well - how many speakers allow that?

and I can endorse the Gigaworks T20s - very nice speakers without that excessively boomy bass you get with a sub.
