5850 in crossfire or single card for 260 quid this is my dilema
im running a 1080p tv and a 2nd mon at 1680 x1050 q6600 at 3.2 ghz 4 gb ram and a x 48 mo bo with 2 x 16 speed pci express 2.0 sockets

im looking for bang for buck at 130 quid the 5850 is a beast and my mo bo and power supply can easily handle 2 of them for just under 260 quid. would this be better than a single 560 ti or a 6970 6950? the shear amout of stream processors would be silly.

I cant stretch to the gtx 570's as they start around 275 so they are out what are your thoughts if you had 260 quid max and my rig how would you guys go.

my psu is a corsair hx 620 I have 8 pin and 6 pin modular cables and lots of them

I'd have reservations as to whether a 620W PSU could handle two of those cards, but they do offer a fair performance improvement.

That said, an unlocked 6950 should be able to handle just about anything you can throw at it for a good while yet, so I'd consider getting one of them and then going crossfire later when it is beginning to struggle (and when you can replace your PSU :P ).

That is my plan - One of the most demanding games at the moment seems to be Metro, and even that is playable with everything on full at 1920x1200, although I'll likely turn it down just a little bit as I have had the odd point where it's dropped down under 20FPS, albeit a rare happening.

get the 480gtx i just moved off 5850 crossfire

its about 5% less power when overclocked on stock cooling

the 6950 is about the same when unlocked

the psu is a beast corsair 620 hx are sli certified for 2 gtx 480's so its not a problem. I just want raw power at 1080p main and still be able to use 2nd mon for ventrillo browsing etc

Very much doubt that as they pull over 850 at load, and thats without OCing, I know Corsair are good but they aint that good

Id say either gigabyte 560SOC, or 6950 flashed to 6970

my flat mate has same psu and he got 2 470 running and his rig it is stable thats good enough for me. That said he does have a duel core not a quad like me dont know how much differnce that makes.

wow those 480 are power hungry I take it back no way my psu could handle 2 of those. his probably can cus its 2 470 under gaming load not futuremark 520 watts when gaming those futuremark load watts are insane 700 plus.
anyhow my motherboard cant sli so its not a issue. its only x fire or a single gfx card. back on topic I hear that not all the 6950 can unlock anymore so whats best bang for buck lads assumig I cant unlock it to a 6970.

Never understand this logic. If you can afford £260, surely you can find another £15!? Money can't be that tight?

Personally I would warn against Fermi 1.0 (470's 480's) and get either a 570/560 or 6950 and unlock.
Fermi 1.0 only makes sense if your on water imo and then that's a hell of a lot of heat dump in your loop.

money is that tight i said 260 quid max as in utter max im moting my car and valantines weekend away so unless i wait till next month it really is 260 max ideally less than that. however i dont want a gimped system cus I game a lot waorld of warcraft, batlefeild bc2 footy manager and total war games mostly but I always play latest games want crysis 2 not bothered about metro. im moving from a 3870 x2 and want massive gains hopefully.

what makes me smile is those people who say sell your card and buy the current one now as you can always crossfire/SLI when it starts to struggle, rather than just buying another one of the same and crossfiring/sli that

Then, when that times comes they say sell your card and buy the current one now as you can always crossfire/SLI when it starts to struggle

Then, when that times comes around again they say sell your card and buy the current one now as you can always crossfire/SLI when it starts to struggle

Top Tip: If you want mega power and bragging rights buy mutliple cards and crossfire them straight away, or always stick with a single card solution :D

A load of tosh, so long as you have a decent case with good airflow there's absolutely no need for water. How can you "personally" warn someone against something you've obviously never tried?
I really wish people would stop talking out of their arses in this forum, what are you basing your opinions on? hearsay? some random rumours?

I have a 480 and a 260 in my system, and suffer none of these horrendous heat issues that people who haven't actually owned a 480 keep banging on about.
It's just downright ridiculous that you're basing your opinions on something some anti-Nvidia zealot has posted in the past.
Please get your facts right before posting such utter BS again!

+1, hx620 will be alright for gtx480, but not 2 of them
