Whats the best SSD overall and is 60-64gb plenty for OS and a couple of games/Programs ?

What SSD should I go for overall speed and performance (I really want a fast boot up time) I could possibly also afford to do one of the follow:

1- Buy 2 SSDs and set it up in raid0 or

2 - Upgrade my mobo to 6gb sata ports (For 6gb/s SSD)

What do you recommend ?

Intel are good, as are OCZ and Crucial, however theres a new generation of SSDs areound the corner and as such you should prob wait

Re size, I have a 160gig X25M and its 80% full with windows, office and 9/10 games

Really? Maybe I made a mistake ordering a 60GB Vertex 2e to replace my Vertex 30GB.

Do you have any more info?

I have found that 30GB is just enough to have OS and programs. No room for games though. 60 should be enough for my needs.

I advise against RAID and SSDs. It increases latency, and the only benefit is sequential transfer times.

There's no benefit to 6Gbps connections to the drive. The only time you'll see any benefit is if you're doing large sequential transfers.

What matters is IOPS. That was what turned OCZ SSDs around when the first Vertex was coming out, Tony realised that it might be worthwhile optimising the firmware for IOPS rather than big sequentials. It's of course no secret now and that's what everybody aims for.

60GB should be fine. At that capacity the Vertex 2e beats the Crucial for performance.

Don't get 2x30GB.

I don't think we're going to see huge real performance increases with the next generation. It will not be the giant leaps forward that we saw between 1st and 2nd.

i use a 64gb for os and a couple of games... works fine.

if anything it helps me, because it reminds me to unistall crap that i don't use that often. how many different games are you likely to be playing at the same time??

horses for courses though.

64GB is enough for my W7 64-bit install plus Adobe CS5, my spotify cache, hibernation and page files, email etc and still have ~10gb free.

Thanks mate, great advice !

When I get it, should I treat it like a normal format or is there anything extra I should do for maximum performance. Also what is TRIM, I have heard of it but do I need to activate it or anything like that ?

Assuming you're on Windows Vista or 7 then Windows will partition it properly. If you're on Windows 7 then once you run the experience index Windows will adjust behaviour to accomodate the drive.

Never do a full format on it :)

TRIM is only available in Windows7 and is enabled by default.

Yeah. A full format just wears the drive. There's no benefit in doing a full format. Just select the quick option in Windows.

Right, bought the vertex 2E 60gb when it came down to £95 :) Thanks a lot Gibb! How should I go about formatting it for maximum performance and effectiveness??

Should I start is as a secondary drive and upgrade firmware . . .? please give me some advice :)

go into the bios, set the sata controller too AHCI.

attach the SSD, disconnect the existing HDD and install windows on it, then drivers etc

disable disk defrag as this ruins SSD's.

and just reattach the HDD and have fun.

Awesome, cheers stulid! What about all the tweaks etc, I'm tempted to try this program "SSD Tweaker Pro 1.8.4" what do you think ??

And why does everyone talk about Sanitary Erase, do I need this on a brand new SSD ?

no need to do any erase at all, just install windows on it, updates, drivers, then the games/apps.

SSD tweaker sounds like B******S, dont install it, probably full of trojans and stuff.

It looks legit, can you check it out and see if its worth it or risky ?
