i'm weighing up doing australasia in a few months but haven't done any backpacking since 2006, could do with hearing others (if any) plans for a bit of persuasive inspiration

Australia is hugely more expensive at the moment due to the strength of the AUD.

You get only 1.6 of them for your pound compared with 2-2.5 which has been the more traditional rate.

occupation: Project Manager in civils.
mortgage: All paid
destination: Austria, Canada, Greece. Few others yet undecided.
budget: No budget. I don't spend much anyway so I pretty much do what I want.
departing: For Austria, April. Canada in June, Greece in later summer. There will be a few European city breaks in between, but they're usually decided a few days before departure.

Prob not travelling as such but just had a week in Dominican, Vegas for 5 nights in July , Philadelphia for 3 nights in August and Atlantic City 5 nights Sept, thats it so far

I'll be off once I'm finally free from uni, heading back to China to find some sort of a job.

age - 23
occupation - Student/pub kitchen cook
mortgage - Nope
destination - China. Beijing initially, then Dalian, then wherever I find some sort of work.
budget - Shoestring, few hundred max after flights, but plenty of people I know there to put me up.
departing - At the end of the Summer, I'd imagine.

This is an 8 day holiday though, rather than 'travelling'.

doesn't matter really. the difference between a holiday and travelling is a personal one. to me, a holiday is 2 or 3 weeks in a hotel resort or villa, travelling is multiple stop overs and roughing it for the most part in hostels or other budget accomodation. i just don't know if i can do it with a mortgage.

always wondered what sort of money folks need to go for 6 months and where they get it from, I assume many work to get buy otherwise you are looking at prob £10k+ even roughing it

Looking to travel around Asia/Australasia for 2/3 months from May time. Myself and my partner have been working for the last year, and have saved a sum to take us around. Plan on using hostels etc, so hopefully be able to make the money last. Any hints and tips would be much appreciated! It's our first time backpacking!

I spent just over £3k in total for 5 months round SE Asia, not working along the way, and that included a few last minute unexpected flights around the region. Was most definitely roughing it, but never felt there was something I couldn't afford to do had I wanted to.
