I was only wanting to know what Americans call a return ticket - a round-trip ticket - they don't understand a return.

Who says they don't understand a return....

I have never had a problem asking for return tickets on Planes and Trains. Round-trip is the preferred usage but they are not stupid.

My sister who has just married a yank and moved to deepest Connecticut.

Then again she could have been using some artistic licence.

I lived in the states for a couple of years and didn't find any trouble with 'return' hence my google search. On the other hand I had to always say tooona rather than tuna when I was ordering food.
