So, after the incident with the RAD, I think I will go back to air cooling, as it is simple and easy...unless you can sell me W/C again.

What air cooler is best for 775?

For the best cooler for 775, you're looking at the Noctua and Thermalrights as above.

Personally for your E8400, I'd bet you'd get the best bang for your buck from something like the Titan Fenrir Evo.

I know of two people running E3110s (essentially the Xeon version of the E8400) at 4GHz on £19 Xigmatek HDT-S1283 coolers... Sure, you need decent case airflow, and regular dusting, but it just shows you don't need to spend big ££ to get decent 'clocks at safe temps.

Forget all the new latest coolers, most are too expensive, look for a thermalright ultra extreme on auction, arguably the best cpu cooler ever.
 
I'd buy a venomous X if I had 3 apaches spare that or a Cogage Arrow both around £40 though :/ + maybe fan clips.
But then the archon is £46 and is up there with the d14 and arrow.

You don't need crazy sized coolers to get an E8400 up to 4.0+, I'm only using an Ultra120 with a single TriCool fan (mid setting, 1200rpm I think) and it doesn't go much over 80 under IBT... Normal use/gaming you'll be lucky to see 55

I think probably the Arctic Freezer 13 at the top of the page would do fine :)

I would stump up for the best cooler possible incase he wants to upgrade to a quad in the future.
 
OK, So I have a new case on the way, something nicer looking and more grown up than my HAF, got a Fractal Design R3.

What cooler would you suggest that will fit nicely inside?
